This is my 03 bushmaster female she runs around 13 to 1400gms never misses a meal. Some times gets constipated a warm bath usually resolves that. For the past
month when I bother her she is a little raspy but still pounding food (2 Frozen Mice, she would take 4 but I cut her back)I paired her about 5 or 6months ago
with a male for 2 weeks with limited breeding. About 10 days ago deficated and within 2 0r 3 days I noticed swelling in her lower third. Is this ovulation,
water retention, advanced kidney disease, RI issues? She is definitley uncomfortable and not interested in food(absolutley no luring). should I rush her to A
Vet? I had her out Saturday and her lower third was just bloated I felt no hardness unlike when she is constipated with calcium hardness around her vent, just
soft.

She does not look happy. Thats too far down and too "soft" looking to be an ovulation. I would guess its gas. You said she sounds raspy, and is now
not feeding, i would think she has RI issues and would look into getting a culture done, and possible starting her on meds before the results get back. You can
always switch meds after the results come back, but time is key with RI's and happy endings.

I agree with Chris that this doesn't look good. I'd get her to a vet ASAP to have her looked at.

Thanks everyone for the Dr.Skagg referral, she deals with a lot of GTPs. And seemed very knowlegable. She xrayed her and Chris, you were correct GAS outside
the GI trac, Dr. Skagg used a 18g needle and aspirated her, she said that because of the Clean smell the problem was not from the GI trac. She gave me Baytril
to treat her with and we will see. The animal although perturbed, seems normal and alert. she tried to get a fecal but came up empty. She was not raspy at all
as we handled her. We agreed to watch her and if she blows up again to release the gas then reasses, for more invasive proceedures.
Any thoughts or comments are welcome, thanks again. Here are the xrays.

Hope she recovers for you Bob. Those were very interesting x-rays. Glad you found a great vet to help you too.

Well she feels good enough to perch last night so maybe tonight or tommorow I will offer food. If she's up to it.
Question can or should I inject the mouse with Baytril that the she is on? |

Hi Bob,
I would not inject the mouse. I asked my vet about this and he said that with a snake's slow digestive process, the medicine would lose its properties by the time the snake was able to absorb it, and that if you are on a schedule, "digesting" the medicine in a food item would add another couple days to get into the snake's system as well. Not a good idea in my opinion. Good luck with her. Andrew |
