Anyone using a ozone generator room deodorizer? |

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone uses, or has used a ozone generator room deodorizer for their snake room, or rodent breeding smell. Any problems with using one? Any models to look for? Any info would be helpful. Thanks, Jay |

I think those things are bad news. Ozone is toxic at high enough concentrations and can be dangerous for asthmatics even at low concentrations. I also think
they smell terrible. We used one at my previous place of employment for a while in a concentrated rodent colony room and I swear the ozone smell mixed with
the rodent smell was enough to make me want to puke. We used them in a larger animal care room, too, with various animals and all I could smell was the ozone.
I don't think they work, although there are people who swear by them. Take a look at what the EPA says about them: http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/ozonegen.html

I used to have one in college to keep the smell down, but I wasn't breeding snakes at the time.......................
It was quite a pungent operation, and the ozone did a reaonably good job covering up the smell.

I used one I got from Brookstone for a while. It worked somewhat. It didn't seem to do anything if one of my Bloods peed or pooped. Worst smell I have ever
came across. I have been debating on getting one of these from Tony Nicoli http://www.boas.net/Air_Purifier.html

I would recommend an ionizer rather than an ozone generator
2.3.2 GTP's, 2.2 hognose,1.1 kenyen sand boas, 2.4 veiled chameleons+80 eggs, 3.4 panther chameleons, and alot of poision dart frogs

There was an article on the potential dangers of ozone generators and ionizers in the Wall Street Journal not too long ago. The link is below so go ahead
and read for yourself. I would personally steer clear of either one since both emit ozone (though the generators emit much more). I used an ozone generator
long ago when I bred red-eyed treefrogs and other amphibs. I quickly stopped when I realized that the jelly masses around their eggs were being destroyed by
the ozone and the flexible airline I used on my pumps became brittle and hard not long after I started using it. If it can do that, imagine what it can do to
a GTP's lung tissue.

What's the difference between and ionizer and an ozone generator if they both emit ozone in the air "purification" process? I have first hand
experience with that brand (although, not the model) that Toni's selling and I wouldn't waste my money on them because they simply do not work.

I have used a couple of the units for my work place. One is a living air X15(adjustable from minimum to the absolute hammer) and the other the Ionic Breezewith
the blue bacteria lamp(little leage unit, but works good) . I'm an apartment manager and in some cases occasional smells come about such as paint, smokers
or even the adjoining unit to my office in while the people cook some really nasty smelling food that manages to stink up were I work. The ozone works good to
destroy odors, but if you let the concentration get too high it isn't particularly good to live in the environment. The good news is the ozone O3 goes
back to O2 in about an hour. Pretty much you can either produce the ozone at a slower rate or turn off the machine after the job is done.
