Anyway he prolapsed again on Tuesday, but this time it was much bigger - way too big for me to try re-inserting myself. I took it to the University of Florida exotic animal hospital and they reduced the swelling down and then manually re-inserted the next day, closing the cloaca with 3 stitches. They said that the tissue looked viable but it was a major prolapse and they weren't very optimistic (30% chance that it'll turn out OK).
Their main concern was something I hadn't heard of before: intusseseption. Basically they aren't sure if the small/large intestines/colon are lined up correctly because everything was shoved in. They did a contrast study to check for intusseseption and it was "inconclusive".
So, if the tissue doesn't go necrotic, then there still may be blockage due to the intusseseption, and either of these would be fatal. They said that corrective surgery for the intusseseption is rarely successful.
So basically we gotta hope the tissue is viable and everything is in the right place. I'm not sure how experienced the vet is with snakes but she is supervised by Elliot Jacobson.
I'm picking the kid up today and then it's back Monday to have the stitches removed and another contrast study done. They may put in a purse-string stitch to hold the tissue inside.
Thoughts?
