Very cool images of our Sun. Note near the end of the 1 minute video there is a flash of static on the screen. That's the wavefront of a solar flare
impacting the SOHO spacecraft. Also, the images* were made possible by a device my brother designed and built--it's not really a camera in the
conventional sense but a sensor.

Wow, your brother is really cool. He is developing awesome technology to learn more about our environment.
Kind of makes scrubbing aquariums seem irrelevant when you think about it. Cool video, j

On a more serious note I used this video in class today because we were discussing life invading land in regards to the importance of the ozone layer because
of the sun's high radiation output. That static part really drove the point home and got a few more "rewind that jawn*" from the kids.

Wow, Gameboy Ty is name callin'
Jon, yep, that's where the name for Soho the snake originated. My brother is author and co-author on a number of patents (some hang in his basement bathroom) one of which is for a portable soft X-Ray gun that is fairly good for soft tissue. When he was developing it he was x-raying everything around the house tinkering with it. An image of his toe accompanied the patent submission. It also has the ability to shoot a fricking lightening bolt--as in, emit one! Currently he is involved with compressing gold targets with lasers. To learn more, search N.O.V.A. and IFC (Inertial confinement fusion process). Not bad for a guy who started out changing light bulbs and ballasts in the Space Science building as a summer job for $6 an hour, huh? Here's a pic of SOHO going up aboard an Atlas II rocket in 95. It is probably the most successful un-manned space endeavor that is still collecting data. My father went down with him for the launch--it was just like the old days for him....
Thanks. --jb (Romano, you'll always have "Mite Phase" and no one can take that away from you. Nice job there.) |

JB,
That fancy pants rocket stuff your brother does is ok (if you're into that sort of thing), but you bring us stuff like this:
