Chlorhexidine  - is a cationic polybiguanide and belongs to the chemical group known as biguanides . It is used primarily as its salts (e.g., the dihydrochloride, diacetate and digluconate). As a biocide, its target is the bacterial cell wall. At low concentrations, CH binds to the negatively charged cell wall and disrupts its osmotic equilibrium. At higher concentrations, CH attacks the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane and denatures microbial proteins. Ch has both a rapid onset of bactericidal action and prolonged antimicrobial efficacy through residual effects.

Chlorhexidinel provides antiseptic and disinfectant activity against a wide range of micro-organisms that commonly cause infections. Depending on the formulation and concentration of CH used, CH is bactericidal, virucidal, and fungicidal.

 At low concentrations, CH is effective against most gram-positive bacteria;

At higher concentrations CH is effective against gram-negative bacteria;

At the highest concentrations, CH is active against yeasts;

Virucidal activity is good against enveloped viruses (such as HIV, cytomegalovirus, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, and herpesvirus) but not against "naked" viruses (such as rotavirus, adenovirus, or enterovirus);

CH has no sporicidal activity, so it is not effective against spores of Clostridium difficile.

CH is not active against mycobacteria.

Chlorhexidine should be diluted before use. Depending on the product used, a dilution of 1-6 ounces per gallon of clean water is recommended for general cleaning and sterilization. Objects should be soaked for at least 10 minutes before use.  *Please read all product instructions before using.

 Note : Proprietary blends often include additives that can improve the original products effectiveness but they also add to the cost.

 Nolvasan® -   Chlorhexidine diacetate,  is one of the proprietary names for Chlorhexidine. .  It is a 2% solution of 1,1’-Hexamethylenebis [5-(p-chlorophenyl) biguanide]) diacetate.

 Nolvasan is virucidal, bactericidal, fungicidal sanitizing solution useful in the disinfection of equipment and premises. Nolvasan solution has proven to work against at least 60 different bacteria, fungi, yeasts and viruses.

 Nolvasan is non-corrosive, has minimal to no skin irritation, and retains antimicrobial activity in the presence of organic matter. Nolvasan’s unique binding to skin proteins provides residual activity for as long as two days. This is an excellent antiseptic for cleaning and flushing wounds. Do not use directly on animals at high concentrations. For treating wounds please seek advice from you veterinarian.

 Dilution rates range from 1 oz/gal to 6 oz/gal depending on intended use.

Nolvasan – 2% -1 gallon between $ 75  - $100.00

Generic Chlorhexidine - 4 % - 1Gallon $30.00, 2% gallon – around $20.00
