Amazon tree boas, are those corallus caninus? If so then I've read about those as well

There is a slight difference Amazon Tree Boa is Corallus Hortulanus. Then you have Corallus Caninus which are Amazon Emerald Tree Boas/Amazon Basins Emberald
Tree Boas. I was referring you to Corallus Hortulanus since they are much easier to start off with. Pm Megf42 for more info

I second the thought of getting an ATB. They are without a doubt, the most interesting species you'll ever get to "play with". Some are quite
docile, but they are the most alert species I've ever worked with. They notice everything. They are also quite hardy...even the imports, and are far more
forgiving of husbandry errors than GTP's. I love both species, but they are both completely different to work with although their needs are similar.

Well, I heard all about GTP's not being a good choice for a 'first snake', and how difficult they are to keep. I also heard about them having nasty
dispositions, and not being able to handle them. I must say, that my first (and only) snake is a chondro, which I had wanted for years. His care is not as
difficult or complicated as some of the Aussie gecko species I keep. I handle him regularly (in daylight hours only!), and every time I open his enclosure I
stroke his coils and talk to him. He only struck at me once... and it was a bluff, when I was trying to get some stick shed off his head.
I am a 'touchy-feely' reptile keeper, and I would not consider a chondro to be the kind of snake you can hold and handle while sitting and watching TV. But, I do consider mine as a beloved pet... a beautiful and gentle creature that brings me joy to watch and handle a few times a week. They are truly amazing and fascinating creatures!

LOL!!! Awww, come on! If you want a fuzzy 'pet' that will do tricks, come when you call it, or mimmick your voice... then get a dog, cat, or budgie!
When we think of pets, we think of petting them. Well, I pet my chondro every time I open his cage to mist or clean. Sometimes, I open his cage just to
'pet' him. He knows my voice. He knows my touch. When I take his perch out to handle him, he comes straight to me, and anchors himself on my arm.
He's a snake, for pete's sake... not a terrier or a kitten. I don't expect him to act like anything other than a chondro! I am in awe of his beauty
and movement. I get a thrill feeding him, and watching him eat. I love it when I approach his cage and he instantly recognizes me, and becomes alert and lures
me with his tail to be fed. Anyone else in the room can talk and he will not acknowledge them, but when I speak, he becomes aware of me... watching my every
move.
Chahaya is my 'pet' chondro. He's not like my Schnauzers or the fish in my tanks. He is a snake, and the most beautiful and awesome creature I keep... in his own right.

haha, well thanks guys for all your responses. I'll definitely take into consideration what you've said. I may start with a carpet python like someone
suggested. But when I get a GTP and hopefully I will someday, I'll post pics of her/him here.

My opinion is probably in the minority here but I do not agree with the concept of "starter snakes". If you want a carpet, get a carpet, but if your true goal is to own a chondro, get a chondro. I understand what people are saying about chondros not being a good first snake but I am not sure I agree with it. In fact, I think in some cases experience with other snakes could actually put you at a disadvantage. Some of the beginners that I have spoken with that seem to have the most trouble are the ones who boast about their experience with other species. Some of them seem to bring with them an over-generalized idea of how to care for snakes and are sometimes more difficult to convince that you can't care for them the same way you would care for a ball python or corn snake. Someone with no experience may be more open to suggestions from experience keepers. I do agree that carpets and amazon tree boas will offer comparable experience and would benefit you in the end, but if your ultimate goal is to obtain a chondro, get the chondro. Just do the research first. The fact that you came here asking questions is a great first step. Good luck, Bart |

I agree. The only snake I have ever wanted was a chondro, so I got a chondro! He is AWESOME, and like I said earlier in theis thread... I have geckos species
that are harder to care for and much more skittish. If you want a chondro... get one! You won't be sorry. You may look a little foolish asking some of the
'newbie' questions I have asked here, but every person here started out with their first GTP, too.

Re: Green Tree Pythons as pets? | ||

You just need to define what is a pet to you. No Chondros aren't cuddly and fuzzy and not everyone of them can be handled. On the other hand with the
right one you can have a pet snake that can be taken out during the day and to me is more interesting then a ball python, not trying to slam balls this is
just me.
