O.T. New arboreal....Sibon Nebulatus!! |

It has taken me nearly 3 years to find one, but at last I got one! I had read an article a few years ago about these snail eaters and I wanted to get some to
start a captive breeding program here. Little did I know how difficult that was going to be. None of the importers had any, nor had they seen any either ever
or in a long time. I got in touch with the author of the article..by snail mail (no pun intended) and we've been e-mailing back and forth for the last 2
1/2 years. He's been trying to find someone to breed them in Costa Rica in order to try to import some of the offspring. I have contacted most of the
major zoos worldwide to see if any of them had some. I contacted several universities that had a reptile library including one in Russia. I also contacted
every reptarium in Costa Rica that I could locate. Over the years I've collected any written information available on the species and have continued to
e-mail importers monthly to remind them to keep looking. By chance my buddy Joe was looking thru the classifieds on Kingsnake.com and found one for sale. I
came home to a yahoo I.M. and immediately found the ad. I e-mailed and called the seller and when I got out of work I was hoping there would be a message on
my phone...nothing....came home...no e-mail....now there was no ad! I was crushed...so close and I missed out! At Joe's urging, I tried one last e-mail
and in the morning I had a reply! The animal was available and he had been out of town. Soooo, to make a long story short....I got it! Without further
ado....Meet Maestro: Sibon Nebulatus-Common name: Cloudy snail eater or Clouded Snail sucker.

It does feel good! I know someone who has females so I'm hoping he'd be agreeable to selling one to me. In return, if I was able to breed them, I'd
give him a male if there was one. We'll have to see what happens, but right now, I just want to get it eating and keep it healthy.

That looks really cool and congrats on finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow so to speak. How about a little info on this guy, I've never heard
of these before and you are probably an expert by now.

The Sibon species is found all over central/south america from Costa Rica to the Honduras, Suriname and even up into the southern portions of Mexico and also
Nicaragua. They eat snails and slugs. Most are arboreal, but there are a couple that are primarily terrestrial. Their close relative is the Dipsus
species...also a snail eater. I think we have one here in N. America. The Nebulatus are the most commonly found. I hope someday I'll be able to get a hold
of some of the more rare species too as they are very pretty, resembling the green and pink eyelash vipers in color and pattern. I have ordered canned snails
from Zoo Med and I am also going to try some freshwater snails as they are smaller and should be palatable. I also have a gal at work who has a lot of slugs
around her place and she's going to collect some of those for me.

Had no choice about that Jurgen! I'm one who does a lot of homework before getting a new animal that I've never kept before...but 2 21/2 years is
rediculous! This will be a learning experience for certain. I just wish I had a larger base of animals to work with so that I could at least have a bit of a
cushion if an animal doesn't thrive. Oh well....I guess I'm just going to have to do it right the first time....God the pressure!

I'm just hoping it does well. Nothing like having a one of a kind species.....you can just find another if something goes wrong...in another 3 years! And
then you don't know if it was something you did or if it just was the animal.
