I feed my all my adult snakes every 2 weeks, every 10 days for the yearlings, and once a week for babies. I think most captive born and bred animals, colubrids, boas and pythons alike are fed too much. I feed an african rat the size of the largest part of the animal every 2 weeks. Yes, my animals are hungry. They don't refuse food..except perhaps at shedding time and that's just one or two of them. Even the new amazon I got that was supposed to be a tough feeder pounds the food when he gets it. No, Tempest won't be ready to breed until MAYBE next year at the age of 5, but I truly think that animals in the wild don't breed at 3. They wouldn't be up to weight by then..or even close. She's not quite at 700 grams now. I've had one prolapse feeding once a week, and that was mice or a rat...either one, and I had that happen. So now...it's super conservative. I might add that the majority of my snakes...all species, would eat daily if I let them. They are often in the hunting position the day after I feed, and sometimes the same night. Snakes are opportunistic feeders, and most would eat themselves to death if given the chance. I caught a ratsnake in my suppliers mouse house who had laid up behind the tubs and picked off any mice that had escaped. He had at least 4 bulges in him and would probably have happily sat there eating more when they came along.

Buddy, I'm aware that they most likely aren't 100 grams...probably most never get that large, however I think we push them to maturity faster feeding more in the effort to get them to what we consider good breeding weight sooner. Perhaps in the wild, they stay much smaller and less mature for longer and don't start breeding until they are older than 3 or 4 years old. Has there been any way to establish breeding ages in wild chondros or is it all a guesstamet?
