Does having dim/low room lighting on at night disturb normal chondro behavior ?
My normal light cycle runs 8am-8pm. My hectic schedule usually only allows me at home after hours, sometimes with lights on maybe 9-11pm.
Should I be concerned?

Nocturnal ambient room light: does it matter ?? |

I never really gave consideration to this before, but wanted to get your thoughts.

I wouldn't be too concerned unless they are getting more than 14 hours of daylight personally. If you are really concerned about it why not just have your
lights come on at say 10 or 11am and turn off at 10 or 11pm. That way the lights are still on when you get home

I've thought about it before and come to the conclusion that there is a moon. How much brighter is the ambient light they receive than the moon is on given
nights?

I had some of those red night bulbs going some of the cages in my snake room, and when I stopped using them and went pitch black, I noticed a lot more activity
at least from 8-12 or so.

I agree with all of you-
There is undoubtedly some extraneous nighttime light exposure, be it the moon, artificial lighting, whatever. If you think about it, w hen you're field herping at night- you often get skunked during the full moon terms. But, on the other hand, some herps move into disturbed or city areas to be around the street lights and nighttime commotion i/e: frogs and sea turtles. I too notice the reduced amount of activity @ night with the lights on- especially with one female. By lights on, I mean a dim incandescent lamp in an adjancent room and a large computer monitor. So, maybe it is a minuscule issue that doesn't even need to be considered, but its interesting The nighttime disturbance is obviously natural, but maybe its a stressor? Maybe the opposite. Another who the hell knows ?!? |

And, maybe the increased nighttime activity is not a great thing?
Say these guys feed and breed normally with night light exposure, then maybe you are saving yourself some cage accidents, broken necks, kinks, snout rub, etc? |

All I can say is that as soon as the cage lights go off It dosen't matter what lighting is on in my room. The chondros are as alert and active as if it were
pitch black.I don't leave any lighting on in my room after lights off in the cages, but this a behavior I noticed.I beleive it would be best to give the
aniamals a natural photoperiod.

I've experienced the same thing Bill. Mine seem to know when the timer is set to turn off the light and they are already poised in position when the cage
lights click off regardless of whether or not the room is actually dark. Right now the snake room isn't really dark until almost 9 pm. The cage lights go
out around 7. They are already crawling around by 7:15.

Hmmmm?
I have always just used red bulbs to work the animals after their lights have turned off. So I am not really sure. I have had several timers just stop turning off the lights and or a power outage while I was at work. In short my animals tend to be less active if the lights remain on or the room lighting is too bright.
