While at the Reptile Supershow last weekend I met and spoke with David Young of www.Reptster.com about shipping. He has signed a deal with FedEx that allows anyone to ship through them and receive a 20% discount on shipping costs (which includes a free insulated box provided by Reptser) or a 25% discount if you use your own shipping containers.

The idea is that you must watch a video on the site to show proper shipping methods, then you agree to abide by all laws and package properly and you can ship with verified status through FedEx. I haven't used this service yet, but have done a little follow-up since the show and it's sure looking like a wonderful tool for the herp community, especially those of us that only ship once in awhile.

If there are any problems you can still contact FedEx direct using your tracking number and track the package.

Just wanted to share this shipping alternative with everyone!!
AND.... it looks like soon UPS will come on board and offer similar shipping through Reptster to INCLUDE allowing the shipping of snakes which they've never accepted willingly before.

I just went on Reptster.com and saw the video and read the terms and conditions. It all sounds really good, especially the 20-25% discount on shipping taking in consideration the way shipping cost have gone up in the last few months. I think that this is going to be really helpful to a lot of people. Especially if you don't ship a lot, like Cathy already said. Thanks for posting Cathy!

dumb question because i have not heard of any instances of this happening: how much, if any, trauma (or death) occurs to the animals during shipping? any personal experiences with a particular shipper? just a curiosity question, thanks!

So what if you already have na acount with FedEx and verified to ship reptiles? How does that play into the equation?

Jeff, to get the discount you have to book the shipment through Reptster using their account, but basically the rest is the same. You print the label and use your same local drop off point.

So far in all the shipments I've received I only had one DOA, it was a DASH shipment. Insurance claim was not paid to the seller. I think there will be losses no matter what shipper we use but so far FedEx has done very well for me. I especially like the shipping time out of my hand to those on the east coast. From door to door 14 hours or so.... Dash was running close to the same time. Plus, it's an hour one way to the airport for me so adding the fuel cost on for that increases my cost too.

I expect there will be deaths from time to time no matter who we use.

It's all pretty new so we're going to have to see how this goes, it's pretty cool though so far!!

btw, David has posted his phone number on the main page and said at the show to call him if we had any questions or concerns. Go for it!!

This is really cool. After we book the shipment, can we drop off at any local Fed Ex drop off, or is a certain one specified? I definitely need to check into it more.
