Thats quite a large system for such a small tank! How large is the display tank? What are you growing in the middle of the last picture? Macro algae?

wow crazy set up for such a small tank. mine is up and running for 6 months, just live rock and fish + a few inverts for now. i'll get some coral soon,
just tricky finding small enough coral to fit into my tank (without breaking it off a bigger colony or chiseling it off the reef base) i am so stoked though,
for the first time i was able to catch a small group of blue tangs on saturday. they never hang out in places where i can get them. also managed to collect a
black frog fish, those guys and nearly impossible to find! cool and complex set up, get some more updated pics for us and lets us know why its so complicated.

Thats a nice setup. I have a Red Sea Max on the way. Cant wait to transfer into that tank. And for Eugene all that pvc is to plumb the multiple tanks together.
One tank is a sump to put all filtration equipment in, one looks to be a refugium for growing things to reduce nitrates and grow micro organisms, and one looks
to be a frag tank for growing corals. Please correct me if im wrong lan engel. Beautiful tank by the way.

very self suffecient system there
all together that has to be a few 100 gallon tank. with all those mangroves you will never have to change the water. throw a bristle worm into the first pre filter to eat the large sediments and you will never have to touch it again... probably would hurt to add an r/o with a float switch along that line some were to keep the levels correct namaste, joe myself and sleestack are always up for talking fish if you ever need any help Jaysen - keep that frog fish off your sps..if they sit on them to long they will snuff them out "No matter how little money and how few possesions you own,

Wow! That looks complicated but very interesting. Salt water tanks are very HOT!

Thanks everyone. The display tank measures a massive 20x20x8 so roughly 10g or so.I'm very interested in the technical aspect of reef keeping and I have a
basement so why not use the space.Ryan, you are right, although there is no frag tank for the time being. There is one in the works!
The display drains through an overflow and tees off into a skimmer tank(22g) and a refugium(20h) with ballvalves to allow for the majority of the water to be skimmed. Those 2 tanks then drain into a center sump(22g 1/2 full) which houses some macro and phosban and carbon reactors. From the sump,it is pumped up to a mangrove tank and back to the display....follow I really don't need this much water volume but it is fun for me and sps are demanding so stability is key....and the display is very clean almost to a fault. Jaysen, where do you live that you can collect hard coral and fish, that must be awesome! I don't see a problem with breaking off a small piece and mounting it...it will recover in the right conditions. Joe,sleestack,I may need your help as some of my sps are fading slightly.I do use RODI on a float switch in the sump.I am using ab 20k 150de for lighting. It is a blue bulb as you can see.I would like to switch to 20k Radium as I hear they are more white with blue tint.maintance is light with automatic waterchanges weekly and dosing 2part(ca/alk) daily in the morning. Ok I think I got it all...$h*% this is complicated! Thanks again, Ian |

now reef systems is something that i know about...
i instead of dosing you should build yourself a calcium reactor with a CO2 bottle. takes a little tweaking but sps will be huge in no time. i have a plan for a single chamber or a double chamber cal reactor around here some place. i will send it over to you as soon as i can find it.it puts out about 400 ppm calcium and alkalinithy is so high it wont read. i love it. shot me a photo of what the dead loss looks like and see what that might be from. you might need to turn off the super filter adn throw in some dt's adn let is sit for an hour or so. the blue lights are nice, but you need something to get it growing. the thing is so shallow you can use two (2) power compacts on each side of that halide and you should be fine. watch those yellow polyps the will take over a tank with a halide on it and it will snuff out anything in its path. namaste, joe joe_gpa_tampabay@yahoo.com shoot me an email with some photos "No matter how little money and how few possesions you own,

thanks joe,I have considered a calcium reactor in the past and I may get one down the road.Keeping ca/alk steady is not an issue for me as I am steady at 420ca
alk 9.Please send me your reactor plans however.I have no dead tissue anymore and my corals grow like crazy(frag tank coming). The problem is instead of a deep
blue tort I have a lavender tort....fading.I am concerned that maybe I have too much light over a shallow tank,or corals are starving from a system that may be
too clean,if thats possible.I know pics would help but my camera took a crap on me so right now I can't provide that.I think your right with the dt's
and will start feeding more.I have since rid the tank of all zooanthids because of what you stated about 5 months ago...it's strickly sps now.
Joe,send plans to ianengel@yahoo.com no rush and thanks for your help |
