OFF FEED |
Lead | |

Assuming you have a male or female that is well established starting at the age of 6 months, what would you say is considered a normal statistical probabilty
that he or she will go off feed at some time before the animal reaches the age of 3. Please disregard any ailments, sheds, or any out of the ordinary
circumstances. Just a animal that has been feeding consistently, and for some unknown reason has decided to stop feeding.

They're chondros. Sometimes you look at them wrong and they stop eating.
If your animal is otherwise healthy, I would not stress about it. I think it is important to remember that they do not always follow the schedule we have laid out for them. They are not always hungry seven days after their last meal. |

Rolo: I cannot remember ever having a healthy female go off feed for any reason other than a shed cycle. Virtually all of my cycled males go off feed.

We have 16 votes, but only 3 votes have been recorded for females. How about some more input with females?

My experience so far has been 100% in line with Keith's statement. All my adult males have gone off feed for varying amounts of time, so far none longer
than 4 months though, and never had a girl go off fee unless she was shedding or gravid once they're adults.

How to vote twice once for females and once for males?
All my males go off feed. I have one healthy female that goes off feed for very long periods and doesn't lose any weight? But when she on feed there's no stopping her, I get weight gain and growth. I have another healthy female that goes off feed for short periods. Both of these females do not shed sperm plugs, probed female, and have been with males(confirmed with shed sperm plugs and probing) with no fights resutled. But they also did not breed(the only sure way to tell). My other female does not go off feed and should be feed less. Herp on, Larry |

IME, the chance of a healthy female going off feed before age 3 is 0%.

IME, in moving animals to new set ups it is common, especially the last 2 years for me. When I have moved my animals into much larger cages some will not eat when before they were voracious feeders, this past year one of my 2 year old females went off for 3 months when moved into a larger tub - she then started eating no problem.

Andrew...I think that is a very important point and one that I wish I had mentioned before I started the poll. I think that is a circumstance that should
be included because it is something that cannot be avoided.

I had a female go off feed at around 2 1/2 years of age. She fasted for about 3 months. I was second guessing her sex, but alas, she is a she. She is now 4+
and has not gone off feed again since that incident.

Good point, AK. I have had both males and females go off feed when making the switch from tub to cage. I guess I kind of took that as a given.
Also, on several occasions, I've had animals that were VORACIOUS feeders get shipped to new homes only to go off feed for months on end. That is a risk you taken whenever an animals environment is drastically changed.
