OT: Once you go Mac, you never go back? |

My PC took a crap on me last night so I went out and picked up a Mac. I was wondering if any of you have a Mac and run Windows XP on it and if you have any
issues because of it. The reason I am looking to run XP is because all my website development software is for Microsoft. Any input would be appreciated!
Thanks, Brett

Runs like a charm but I don't use it anymore, OSX runs so much better! I'm using a Macbook with OSX and Vista. You can run also windows in a window
using Parallels but it will slow your mac down.

I'm no expert but my sister in law has a MAC and has had some defanate/expensive problems with it. She's had it in the shop more than once.
They look nice, and like I said...I don't consider myelf all that knowledgable on the subject. I personally like DELL and HP. |

Running my Macbook Pro right now with XP Pro running on Parallels for the couple of apps for work that I need Windows for, and it has been GOLDEN for two
years. I sell both at work, and make WAY more money on Windows machines, but at the end of the day, MOST people are better off on a Mac.

I bought a Mac for my wife last year she loves it. I will admit I like it too. As far as needing xp I would just buy a used computer off craigslist just to
update your website. No need to pollute a perfectly running machine!

Hi Brett,
I was in a similar situation about 4 years ago...hesitant to make the jump but irritated as hell with two dying PC's. I hated the high prices and playful icons the mac's had to offer, but in the end making the jump was an incredible move. I jumped from a desktop and laptop PC to one powerbook 15". I now run the powerbook into a 23" cinema display at home. For me, the performance of image editiing and related software is just incredible. The playful icons (and, things like "corners") are all incredibly useful and practical. Furthermore you can do things like have 2 weeks of uptime (no restarting) and performance is hardly affected. Icing on the cake is there are little or no viruses, worms, adware or anything to watch out for with the mac. I formerly used virtual PC to connect to the windows platform for one software program. It worked suspiciously fine with no problems, but now I am aware there are more options available like, parallel. Here is a great website that provides a safe time to purchase your apple stuff: (so you don't invest and get screwed with a new model update) http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/ |

Thanks for all the replies. Randy, when you say you run it in parallels you mean simultaneously? The guy at the store told me I would need special software to
do that or could I just install it and would have to log on to one OS or the other. Any thoughts on that?? Thanks Brett

Brett, I just did this for a client on a powerbook, macbook, whatever the hell it was.
Works great. Grab a copy of xp pro oem from tiger direct for 139 bucks. setup the mac, run boot camp and make a 13g partition for the windows os and install to that. The instructions are pretty clear. You just hold down the opt key on the mac when you turn it on and you get a prompt for what partition (OS) you want to boot to. Parallels is an "emulator" which is why it is slow. -d |

I honestly like Parallels better than Boot Camp because I can run XP and OSX simultaneously without having to reboot, so for instance you can have IE open in
your XP window while also checking the site in Safari on the Mac side.

Hey Brett--
Good to hear that you finally made the intellectual move and picked up a Mac! Drop me an email and we can discuss your web material, for remember, all I deal with are Macs (more than 350 in systems admin) although I stumble and work thru the tanks (Windoz machines to a much lesser extent) also. In addition, I constructed commercial ad copy for years. Although I have used both Parallels and Boot Camp, I agree with Tim--pick up a cheep Windows based computer, like a Del, I've seen them as low as $300! and don't infect your Mac with Windoz. Rich |

I have a very small desk so a second comp is not going to happen. I decided to go with the Boot Camp method and have created a partition and loaded in XP. So
far so good but I haven't loaded any of my programs in yet. Any recommendations on which web browser to use on the Mac side, other than Safari? I'm use
to IE and Safari is a pain in the ass so far! Rich, I will be picking that crispy brain of yours regarding all of this Mac stuff. Thanks again, Brett
