You know Joe, I almost didn't open this because I get so jealous that someone's gone off to C.R. and I haven't been able to go there yet! AND you
spotted some of the Sibon species snakes that I've been trying to find for the last 2 years!! I could really hate you! Beautiful photos and awesome shot of
compartment syndrome in that arm that was envenomated. Very cool! Who do you set up these trips with, or do you do it yourself? Some day I will go....it's
a dream of mine!

thanks all!
maelstrom, the red eyed tree frog has that weird ("nictitating") membrane, which is like a 3rd eyelid. its protective but stilll lets them see. meg- usually these trips are academic / research related...its an easy way for me to knock out credits and have some fun in the field. beats the typical ADD in the classroom. i'm looking into setting up a trip to indonesia late 2009, if any of you chondro heads are interested in coming. it will be expensive and out of most's comfort zones but probably a life changing trip. a few friends regularly go to raja ampat / aka west papua, which is adjacent to some prime chondro habitat, e.g. kofaiu island. could potentially fly into jakarta and check out bushmaster farm if they are receptive to that. obviously some of the best diving in the world as well! |

An academic trip sounds perfect. Next time you need someone to carry your luggage let me know! I'd kill to be able to see a Sibon in the wild...any one of
them! heck...any of the snail eaters. Wish I could locate some! If you know anyone breeding the Sibon species, I'd love to know about it. I've been
trying for years and have some connections...all to no avail.

That would be very cool, I too have not seen (or looked really) for any in captivity. I know CR exporting is pretty tightly controlled.
You could definitely make some nice display enclosures with those guys, but I sure would not want to be the maintenance guy for a "goo eater" !! |

Well I've been in touch with Louis Porras who wrote an article about them in Reptiles magazine. He also made the English translation for Alejandro
Solorzano's book on the Snakes of Costa Rica. He used to have a breeders license there and still has friends who breed for the Reptilandia there and he was
going to see if any of them were interested in breeding them. I can get the hatchlings from them, just no w/c stuff. I also found a guy here that has some, but
so far all he has is females. without a male to breed them to, there's no go. He also has some of the Dipsus variety. I'm also in monthly touch with
three importers, one of which has actually gotten them in before. We'll see.

jeff- i use a canon 20d. 100mm macro lens and twin flash for almost every one of these shots.
my trip was two weeks. right at the transition of dry to wet season, so I got to see alot of the frogs coming out and what not. i was in one area (3,000 ha park) for the whole time. |
