Hey guys, what is the latest on this paring? I don't remember when the eggs were laid, but it seems like they should have hatched by now, right? Are you
holding out on us?

I think it all comes down to knowing your equipment and how accurately your temperature measurements are. I always recall G. Maxwell's comments in his book
where he said that asking somebody to spend a few hundred dollars on a good thermocouple and then to calibrate it is like asking them to find moon rocks (or
something like that). Jason's example is a good one to demonstrate that longer than "normal" pip/hatch dates are indicative of temperatures being
lower than suspected. I'd personally rather know where my temps are at in my incubator so that when target dates approach or pass I am more comfortable
pipping than just assuming they need more time. Not to say I have lots of experience, just to say that would be my preference.

Seriously, yeah I'm with you... i plan on buying a thermocouple(r's) or at least borrowing one (good thing i know some chemist!). My temps were
stable.. that i can say.. in accurate totally!

Not to say I have lots of experience, just to say that would be my preference.Greg Maxwell seems to use a very precise temp. regime that means that his animals hatch out more or less spot on 50 days as they would do with maternal incubation. To have that kind of certaintly must be a great benefit but I don't see the problem with using slightly lower temps that might mean a longer incubation period, as long as you're expecting a longer incubation period. Even if you're not expecting such a long period of incubation, my understanding is that pipping the egg a couple of days too early does not harm them. |

sjm27-
There isn't necessarily a problem with cooler temps and hatches at day 56. Have you hatched out chondros? Because personally, the stress and anticipation is enough to give you an ulcer. Anything I can do to minimize the guesswork, and the "should I pip, should I wait, should I kill myslef, etc. etc." is effort well spent. That was my point.
