retained egg |

My female laid eggs on Tuesday May 6th. I decided to go with maternal incubation again. This is her second clutch, the first being infertile a couple of years
ago. 4 days ago I decided to take the nest box out to look at how she and them were doing and smelt something funky. There were two slugs, and 5 seemingly good
eggs. I removed the slugs and put the nest box with the female and good eggs back in the cage. Since I discovered the slugs I wanted to keep a closer eye on
the rest, so yesterday I took them out again. I was upset to see what looked to be a retained egg, not very big, but obvious just before the opening to her
vent. Now it appears it moved down from further inside her, since I didnt notice it 4 days ago. She doesnt seem to be bothered by it either, she has no problem
with making a tight beehive around the eggs. My question is, should I take her to the vet right away? Or will she pass it on her own?

Hi Rob- 7 eggs seems like a strange number, if she has retained eggs she needs to see a vet ASAP. When eggs aren't passed they can adhere to things (each
other, ovaducts ect.), set up infection or be passed into the body cavity (if the ducts are damaged). Keep her hydrated, get her to a vet and keep us posted.
Good luck.

Uh oh.... that does not sound good. I've had 2 experiences with retained eggs so far, neither has a good ending. The first was a girl I purchased that was
"possibly gravid". It turned out she wasn't gravid at all and everything seemed to be going well for me with her. This was my first year of
chondobsession without much experience. When this girl grounded herself and was very lethargic I knew she was in trouble. I called the vet, got an appt. for 2
days later on a Monday when I could take her down... she died on the way to the Dr.!! I had a necropsy done and it turned out she had retained eggs from prior
year and her oviducts were pus filled. Ok, lesson learned.
Second experience was last year, odd number of eggs laid, very few good ones. I pulled the eggs and gave her a couple days to recooperate. When she did not perch normally I figured I'd better take her in to get her checked, her retained eggs were all in one oviduct and it was not apparent by the appearance. The vet tried to express eggs manually, but they had adhered to the oviduct tissue and surgery was required to remove them. We wound up removing the entire oviduct and was treating with antibiotics but this girl just did not bounce back after surgery and I lost her 3 weeks later. At this point I would remove the good eggs and get them in an incubator and get your girl in to the vet asap. If there are retained eggs, time is not your friend and very risky for her. Overall, I am surprised that she was still coiling up on the eggs that she did have though, that's got to be a good sign!! Good luck with this girl, I hope all turns out well for her!!! |

just brought her to the vet and it turns out there are quite a few more then I thought still inside of her from the x-ray. The vet gave her 2 shots, 1 calcium
gluconate and 1 oxytocin. He said these should help her contract the muscles in that area and hopefully release them. If that doesnt happen tonight, he gave me
a number to a specialist and I will be calling her tomorrow.
thanks for the help |

Hope she does all right. I have a cornsnake that has two in her now. I've been massaging them down slowly and when they get close enough to the vent,
I'll either work them out with a lubricated probe, or aspirate the contents out and let her pass the deflated egg. Kathy Love told me I have a week or two
before the contents harden and can't be aspirated. I've never had a female retain eggs, but usually I get them out during the pregnancy to keep them
exercised and toned and I didn't do that with this one. I hope your girl passes the eggs without a problem.

what do u mean by aspirated? is this something i can try without hurting her? im a little surprized at the vet to be honest, i feel for the $210 he coulda made
a better effort then 15 min with 2 shots and an xray.
so i ended up setting the 6* (it turns out) eggs in an incubator i quickly made with a cooler and a submersible heater. I also more importantly let the female back into her normal setup with perches to move around and work those eggs loose. is it possible for me to gently massage the area that contains the eggs and help her out? or will this do more harm then good? |

We use an 18 guage needle and aspirate the content of the egg out. You can either go thru the wall of the body when it's closer down (although I guess you
could do it higher) or if you can see the egg, right thru the shell. Here is a link to Kathy's explanation:

If my girl doesn't finish moving any down soon, I'm going to do that. We're at day 5 since laying the rest.
