I'm not positive about use of formaldehyde products, but here is an account I've experienced with malamine.

I built some melamine enclosures right about 1993. I started keeping baby Burmese in them, dozens of them with several in each 4 foot wide enclosure. I sold the baby Burms in the newspaper or gave them away, but always kept a couple to grow individually in the enclosure until they were about 8 feet. I also had blood pythons, Dumerils Boas, colubrids, and some blue tongue skinks over the next several years. The skinks, and colubrids reproduced. The Dumerils produced a pile of gooey slug stuff. The blood pythons died, but I think it may have had to do with them being imports covered in hundreds of tics when I got them. I got a pair of jungle carpet pythons, one a hatchling and the other a yearling. I kept these animals in the melamine enclosures for a few years until I bred them, had the female maternally produce a 100% hatch in the melamine enclosure and then go on to produce more clutches. I started keeping green tree pythons some time later as well. I had two adults. She produced 10 good eggs that I tried to artificially incubate. One hatched and several died in their eggs after I manually pipped them. The next year she had 20 eggs and I let her maternally incubate them in the melamine enclosure. 19 of them hatched with one egg external to her coils. I gave away the adult female and several years later I move the male to a plastic tub. He died. I bought a pair of Turmezie's best breeder holdbacks in 2000 and kept them in the melamine enclosures. They produce eggs, 17 full size fertile. I destroyed all but one egg in my incubator outside of the melamine enclosures, but I still think it was the formaldehyde. Sorry, couldn't resist. Over time I ultimately kept only the very old Jungle carpet pythons in these enclosures. After the carpets dumped water out and stuff the melamine got pretty beat up with cracks and stuff for the last few years. Some 15 years later I've disposed of those enclosures as it was time for them to go.

I think the trick to a solid melamine enclosure is to seal off the surface from the inner particle board. If you do this my opinion is the melamine surface is pretty darn good. It's hard to toss the enclosures, but looking back they should probably go or be repaired if they crack.

I do have some melamine in my kitchen cabinets as well as the bathrooms. The roof in my home is all chip board on top of the rafters with formaldehyde. Brandon mentioned this. To date I've yet to die, prolapse, or have a guest in my home die or prolapse. Sorry, couldn't resist. I do have a strong urge for pizza and ice cream however which I blame on formaldehyde fumes from the construction materials.
