Sudden Neo Spinal Kink? Help

Hi everyone,

This is weird. I have a neo that is almost two months old. I woke up today to suddenly see a very bad kink on it's body. And there seems to be nothing in the cage that would pose as a hazard to cause such a kink. Has anyone had this before and is there a possible kink cause that is not mechanical but rather disease like. I would probably have to put the animal down....but I just want to have some peace as to what happened.

Its so disheartening, considering that the animal is an excellent feeder and has shown some good growth.

I'll post a pic of the animal later when I get home.

Where is the kink located? Is it by the vent?

I've had a 90-degree kink in babies develop at the vent for no apparent reason, and when they became adults .... blammo, no kink.

But this sounds worse than that. Hope it's not. Looking forward to the pics, hopefully it's not "put him down" bad.

ok well....I came home, the kink was real bad, got the camera to take pics and realized there were no batteries.

I charged the batteries and after a couple of hours I wanted to take pics, and it was gone, the kink I mean, it was freakin gone!!!! WTF?

Any ideas on what it was....seems like the snake was doin crunches or something??? I mean the kink looked real bad, and the snake looked flat right on where the kink was....like it was beat by a stick.

this is real weird.

Where was the kink? Vent? Neck? Midbody?

You may wanna take the animal out and gently run your finger along its spine as it crawls through your hand. See if you can feel anything.

Arnold...I would guess some kind of spastic muscle contraction. I think I remember seeing it myself with one of my neos years ago. The animal developed normally.

This sounds like you may have witnessed the "cigar back" syndrome. I've seen it a couple times now in babies, seems to show up more when they are under stress, or in extremely aggressive feeding mode. So far it seems that most babies that exhibit this will eventually outgrow it and be perfectly normal as adults.

You may have to look closely at this baby, it was from a VERY aggressive eating clutch, like WILD eaters, but it is doing the cigar back thing right in this picture. Look at the flattening right above the pinkie butt. It doesn't look too bad in the pic, but in person, it looked real scary to me. After eating and perching, it appeared normal again.... and now as yearlings you'd never know and they are perfect in every other way and haven't done it again since they were about 4-6 months of age.

Hi guys,

The kink looks exactly like your picture Cathy....and Aaron, it seems like it is at the same mid-body location as Cathy's as well.

Rolo, my wife who is a doctor also suspected muscle spasm/contraction/cramps....but I could only imagine how painful a cramp that lasted for a whole day would be....she has suggested dusting some small minute amount of calcium on the next pinkie meal.

I feel a bit more relieved now....thanks people

I will definitely have my camera ready if it happens again.
