Prolapse and breeding question???? |
Lead | |
|
Can a female lay a clutch without any problems to her health after she had endure a case of prolapse? The prolapse was over a year ago. I wonder if after or
during the laying of the eggs she will prolapse once again. Thanks ahead for all the advice.

What caused the prolapse and how bad was it? Was it immediately taken care of? Was it a result from breeding?shipping? |

I have barely any information on the prolapse because the animal is not in my possession. It's an animal that was offered to me and I'm contemplating
purchasing it but I'm concerned about the prolapse. According to the owner of the animal it was a minor case she was stitched up send home the same day.

I'm going to eventually try breeding my Sorong girl. She prolapsed over a year ago. A small prolapse that had reinserted by the time I got her to the vet,
but if she perched, would come back out. Two stitches on each side of the cloaca that were removed after 10 days, and she has not had a problem since (knock on
wood). I feed VERY conservatively now and she won't be ready for breeding for some time yet. She hasn't reached even 700 grams yet. I asked the same
question here when it happened and had some people say that they didn't breed, and others say that they had no problems.

I would reconsider purchasing that snake. It can definitely happen again . Remember what happened to my colombian motley male? There are plenty of other
females available in the market...

I,m suprised you guys have so many prolapses there.
In here i dont know any gtp keeper who has that? It must have to do ,or to much feeding or keeping the animals to dry. OC |

Hector,
If I'm not mistaken it's my female that you are talking about. I believe she prolapsed because of the stress of maternally incubating her own eggs. She prolapsed about 1 month after being removed from the eggs. I fed her small meals because she was void of her fat reserves and i did not observe her having any problem eating. I can say I was fortunate enough to catch the prolapse early in the morning and was able to get her to a vet that afternoon to reinsert the tissue. The doctor put in sutchers just as a precautionary measure... I believe I did everything in my power to get her back to health but I can't say that it won't happen again for sure. I think shes priced accordingly, But she has been as healthy as can be since the incident. Pete |

Hector I`m giving my girl the year off due to a prolapse after she laid eggs. I`m giving her small meals and she had her first normal BM since the prolapse.
Its hard to say if it will happen again .Some are prone to it once it happens . Calcium deficiency has something to do with it . Its your call though.Pete is a
stand up guy and I don`t think he would sell you the snake if he thought it would be a problem.

Only Chondro wrote: I think we just have more breeders and snakes for longer periods of time. Keep 40 snakes for 20 years with a few hundred breeders and several will have a story to tell. I'd agree about snakes becoming chunky. My current opinion is prolapse has some to do with animal inactivity, being fat and perhaps parasites.

Hey Pete I really like everything about the female and the fact is I'm still contemplating purchasing it but i was a little concern about the prolapse. So
i decided to come on the forum to get opinions from more experience keepers. I hope you not offended because that was certainly not my intension. It's just
that i've heard so many horror stories about prolapse that i'm a little worry. I'm trying to get a couple of females together to do my first
breeding project and it would suck for my first to end up in a prolapse. Pete, I wanted to thank you for being so honest and up front about the back ground on
the female. I think that one of the best things this forum got is honest keepers like yourself.
Thanks Joey and everyone else for your advice. Hector |

I had no reason for the prolapse my snake had. She wasn't fed more than once a week, and usually I waited if she looked like she was getting fecal matter
built up near the vent. She is probably among my most active snakes. She's in a 36" long cage by 24 high and wide. She is sprayed each night and I see
her drinking from both herself and the bowl. She had deficated 2 days before she prolapsed, and had just been fed the day before. She tested negative on her
fecal. I have gone to feeding every 2 weeks for all the chondros except young babies and they get very small meals. So far no problems since and I will
continue to feed conservatively. Much to my snakes disgust I might add

I have had a girl prolapse and go on to produce a clutch of eggs later. It was very stressful for me. I purchased her as a young adult, she prolapsed shortly
after purchase, I reinserted myself and removed perches waited a month or so before feeding and started her back on adult mice. Hadn't had a problem for
nearly two years after the first one so I started cycling her last fall and paired her up with a nice male. About 2 weeks into breeding .... she prolapsed
again, very similar, pulled the male immediately, reinserted, removed perch and hoped she was not gravid.
Skip forward about 2.5 more months and.... prolapse again, same size, not major but it was very stubborn to reinsert this time which I attributed to it possibly drying out a little more than it had before. (less than half a day maximum so tissue was still good, just dryer than I had in the past) I wound up using surgical tape that evening to hold tissue in with intention to get her stitched the next day at vet..... well, woke up to surgical tape in water dish, her in nest box with half her clutch of eggs already deposited!! I had removed perches and left her nest box "just in case" and it was nice and comfy in there for her. The majority of clutch was slugs, but I do have 2 very pretty babies from her this year. Would I breed her again? ..... that I don't know for sure, I'd sure like to but don't want to put her at risk. Although this girl you are thinking of purchasing may well go on to produce just fine and never have another problem I don't think I'd recommend her for anyone just starting out with breeding/keeping these guys. You'll need to be prepared to come up with vet expenses if she should prolapse again which would be much more likely than another girl which has never had this problem. An interesting thing I've noticed so far with my limited breeding experience, the girls that I've grown up from neonates/yearlings have been a lot more productive and trouble free than the couple of girls I picked up that were more grown up. |

No offense taken,
There's no better place to turn when you need expert advise than this forum. You'll see this girl in the classifeds soon for pretty cheap, as my trek up the east coast draws nearer. Good luck finding a female though! |

The fact that Peter divulged her history to potential buyer has to be commended. Good guy in my book. I bet she'll wind up with a good home.

Thanks Cathy,
I intend on using this website and dealing with these same people for years to come. Having a buyer be unsatisfied would only hurt me in the end...I think.. I believe that in this hobby dishonesty about things like this will only hurt you in the end.. Also wouldnt you feel bad if you sold a snake to someone that you knew had a problem with prolapse before and then the snake just falls apart with them? I would have trouble dealing with that. |
