With all of the baseball fans around here, I woud think that maybe a few of you are into baseball memorabilia. Could someone recommend a site or forum that I
might be able to go to find out the value of a baseball I have? When I was a young kid, my grandfather gave me a ball signed by the 1955 allstar team... not
sure if it is AL or NL, but it has Mickey Mantel, Duke Snider, Stan Musual (sp?), and Hank Aaron to name a few.
Any help would be appreciated.

Wow, that sounds like a baseball for a chondro right there.
That's kind of a neat heirloom to keep tho.

Marcial,
Do you have a list of all the names on the ball? I work in baseball and deal with a lot of historians of the game. At first glance at the names, my boss says well over $200 but it depends on the quality of the signatures, etc. If you have a pic to post of it, i might be able to get you more information. Patty |

$200? I was thinking there should be several more zeros behind that number. I know I've seen balls with just ONE of these guys sell for $500-$600... not to mention many of them are now dead. It seems like the last time I had it appraised (this was over 10 years ago), I was told $5000-$8000. I will try to get a pic of it. It is in great shape and has been in a plastic case inside a safe for 25 years.

I love this thread. Collectibles I've always found fascinating.
The fact that it's the All Star dealio, makes it crazy ... I guarantee you that baseball is worth much more than $200. Check out this: Indians And maybe contact the seller and ask him. As far as what someone is willing to pay, eBay is your appraiser. This term will weed out the crap: 1955 baseball -topps -card auto* Check the Completed Items too, as well as a few surrounding years. That should give you something to "watch" for, and probably start getting you ballpark figures. I'd imagine just a Hank Aaron alone would fetch over $200. Hank Aaron Yep.

Holy Sh!t those are some serious baseball names, Ted Williams is a God in Boston, we named a tunnel after him. However the bottom seemed to have dropped out of
the baseball market. I am sitting on about 15 years of Topps complete baseball card sets dating back to the early 80's that are still in the box that have
seemed to lost most of their value.

I would say into the thousands! Mickey Mantle alone would fetch into the thousands... I collected baseball cards on a weekly basis as a kid....and I still have
them!

Marcial,
If you truly want to sell the ball, the best way to go about it is to consign it to a major auction house. There are only three or four who'd be worthy of such a baseball if it's the real deal. Mastronet and Grey Flannel come to mind immediately. Both have large websites. They will charge you a commision, but selling it through them is the hobby seal of approval. They won't auction anything unless their experts vouch for it's authenticity. Without a confirmed expert to write you a "Certificate of Authenticity", your ball will bring just a fraction of it's real worth, simply because there are so many forgeries in the hobby. If you want to keep it, but are just interested in getting a ballpark value for fun, eBay is the way to go. Make a list of the names on the ball, since obviously all the members of both All-Star teams couldn't have fit on a single ball. I'd look for auctions that have already closed. That way you can get a better handle on what people are genuinely willing to pay. Depending on the players who signed your ball, I'm sure the range will be from the low $1000s to the low $10,000s. Roy Campanella and Ted Williams on the ball will certainly bring more than Bobby Avila and Gene Baker. Either way, if you can hold onto it, that's one of those things that comes around once in a lifetime. If you sell it, someday down the road you'll probably wish you hadn't. One of my most precious non-reptile posessions is a baseball signed "To Vinny, Your Pal, Ted Williams".....it's priceless! lol Good luck, that's a beauty. Maybe you can take a photo to show us some time! VinnyButch

Thanks for the advice. The next time I have it out, I will see if I can determine who actually signed it by comparing to the list above. Honestly, I know
nothing about baseball, and most of the names mean nothing to me. I will also get some photos.
From what I remember the allstar team was practicing for the game in Tampa, FL where my grandfather lived, and Campanella actually gave him the ball (not sure what the relationship there was). He actually gave him two balls... the other went to my younger cousin who managed to destroy it over the years by actually playing with it... then his mom (my aunt) tried to super glue it in the case and damaged it even worse... lol. Mine still looks like the day I got it except for maybe a little more yellowy overall appearance (as opposed to white). I'm almost scared to know what it might be worth due to the fact that it may make it difficult for me to hang on to it...lol. Although, I can only imagine what it might be worth in another 25 years....
