My Sandro blue baby has some odd belly scales. I don't know when they got like this and there appears to be no external trauma. Any ideas on what it could be?

Perched normally...

And the odd scales...

There are some more scales like these scattered along the belly. It was very tough to get this critter still enough to take these shots, let alone shots of all the scales. Nothing else seems out of the ordinary with respect to activity or feeding. There is no external bleeding, and no apparent pain.

Thoughts??

When you say no external bleeding, do you mean it appears to be blood, but it's under the scale?

Actually, I"ve got a couple yearlings with red belly scales. Some of them have gone away as the change was completed, but I do still have a couple adults with red belly scales very similar to that also. Don't have any pics, but this boy has them too.

yeah, looks like the snake might have pinched itself trying to squeeze some where.
what is in his cage? something could have moved or shited if it is a decorated cage.

Yeah, Shiloh, it looks like there was bleeding "into" the scale. It's quite odd.

Cathy, did the scales change with sheds at all? I'll be watching this one the next time it sheds.

If I were to take a guess I would guess, this might have happened when the animal shed last... Perhaps the shed stuck a bit and caused a small "tear" under the scale... If that is the case, there is probably nothing to worry about... It will probably go away like Cathy said...

I also had an animal that got some of those blots on the belly scales as it changed, although there were only about 4 or 5 of them. I'm with Cathy on this one.

yeah i would have to agree with shiloh on this one
was the snake's last she a dry or drier shed than the others?
did you have to assist with the shed?

What a good looking animal! I see the black has finally arrived! Good for you. You know what's funny? my Sandro animal has a couple of scales like that, and came like that. I do have a couple of other animals that have that odd coloration as well!

Just my 2 cents.
I think they are just scales that have not changed yet my MB/Carolina male had two until he was just about five years old.
The 2006 lids he sired have them on their belly and flanks.
Both my Golden Sky's had them until they three or four years old.
So I am not thinking they are injuries but just red neonate pigment that has not changed.
For what it matters I have noticed areas the get scraped, scratched, pinched, or damaged typically turn dark purple or almost black.
Ben, my bet is that scale's turns blue or yellow as the animal matures.

Thanks for all the input guys. As best I can tell, there has been no external injury. This guy is still in a hatchling tub - Sterilite brand shoebox tub, with a plastic coat hanger perch. Probably a little too smooth actually. All sheds have been just fine. I'll keep an eye out on the next shed and post an update at that point.

And yes, Sony, the black did arrive

I agree with Greg that traumatic injuries usually appear dark brown, purple or black.

Next time you are up remind me to show you the BT x Arctic female that has about 10% red ventral scales. In this animal it continues to pop up, gaining more slowly. My guess is that it's a line thing as BT is from MB x Powder and Arctic is from MB x TMbf. Just a guess.

Great looking animal btw.

My Papa had red belly scales for a long time....now its pure white, he still has a small patch of red scales on his body. Also Shade had alot of maroon belly scales till she was 5 or so.

looks like pigment. blood would change color with time and fade. scales dont have blood vessels, and blood from the inside wouldnt look that red. of course thats only my opinion........and i have seen animals with red scales. if it was pink and more diffuse it could be too humid.
