I been seeing some great photos on here and i need HELP, I have a Canon Rebel xt and can never get good photos of my chondro, what kind of lighting do you all
use and any tips you have for me...Thanks here is a photo i took yesterday.

That is a very simple camera to use. Where do you have your settings? Standard lens and internal flash?

Jenn...I have the same camera body, but I use it a bit different than you do. Assuming you haven't done this already, this is what I would suggest. Set
your camera in macro mode, this is the symbol with the flower on it, and I suggest this mode based on the picture you are showing which is a small animal.
Zoom all the way in on your subject. Approach the subject as close as you can get where your camera will allow to actually take that shot. If you are too
close, I don't think the Rebel will take the shot and you will see a light flash through your viewer. Keep on backing away from the subject until the
camera allows you to take the picture. I think you will still notice that you will get some over-exposure with the internal flash, but your clarity should
defintely inprove and you can adjust you exposure with your software. If you are still unhappy with the clarity, I would suggest to you that you look into
purchasing a different lens for that camera.

Jenn...also, just make sure if you have a switch on that lens, to set it to auto, and when you are about to take the shot press down on your shutter button
just slightly first and then take the shot. This should allow your auto focus to work as well as any light metering feature you may have on your camera.

You can also use the good ol' indirect sunlight - 
Both of these were taken with Rebels. I highly recommend a digital photo (su-su) studio. I also claim to know absolutely nothing about photography (in fact i hate taking photos). But every photographer i run in to tells me the same thing "don't use the flash until you know what you're doing"

I usually use a piece of white paper to deflect the direct flash to help keep it from washing out the subject excessively. I mostly shoot outdoors.

Learn to get away from AUTO.
I shoot in manual (M) mode almost all of the time. You have flexibility over aperture, shutter speed, and your flash brightness. Your photo is washed out because Auto mode is getting confused. Also, if you have photoshop or any digital photo editing tools, remember it's always better to shoot "dark" than "bright". Once you lose color to near pure white, you can't get it back. If you shoot a little dark and intensify (with a brightness/contrast/intensity filter), it'll come out nice. Best advice is to get a studio where you can control the photo setting so that auto works, or get away from auto and dial in what you want. The film is free, so use it! Good luck! aaron

Ditto everything Aaron wrote. I always shoot everything manual so I am in control of what the photo will look like. Also, when shooting true macro, the
on-camera flash will hardly ever work well. I use off-camera flashes. Having said that, most chondros are big enough that you don't have to be extermely
close to the subject, making the on-camera flash usable in most cases. But, until you understand how exposure works, the flash will rarely make the photo look
the way it want it to. Here's a nice turorial regarding exposure from a great photo site: EXPOSURE
If all else fails switch to Nikon.

Like what was said above tripod, lights and manual mode it is.
Play around with all the settings and see what hits the mark. You have a very nice camera unlike me, I only use a Kodak 4 mp, I am sure you will get it. Greg

Personally, I like taking pics outside. Nothings brings out the colors of your animals like the sun/good ol' mother nature.

I agree Jeff. 99% of my photos are taken outdoors in natural sunlight. No worries about flash that way. I do occasionally shoot some in the cage when the
weather sucks or something.
