All i need to do is some minor touchups, build the doors, and put some vents in, and chose the finish for the outside... So excited. I am very pleased with
how it turned out. What do you guys think?

thanks all!! its great foam coated with brown silicone and eco-earth. It has a piece of PVC running top to bottom that hides the wires for the lights and
provides a little more strength, althought the great foam is quite strong once it cures.
It is supposed to look like nice furntiure. Its actually an old entertainment center. I just moved the divider to the middle and stipped the outside and sealed the inside to protect from the humidity. I have made several custom enclosures like these for serveral people i know. I would really like to start making and selling custom display enclosures for people that have animals that want to show them off in there living room etc. I have done some as conversions (like this one) and several i have made from scratch. I think they come out very nice when done and this way people can have snakes in there house without people going "OMG YOU HAVE A SNAKE!!!!", with these people notice the enclosure first, because they think it is a nice piece of furniture, and then they notice it has a snake it it. Kinda puts them at ease for the snake shock. Anyone in FL want one...??? lol.

Very cool. I'm using the same Great Stuff foam method on 65 gallon that may or may not have a chondro in it. Here's what I'm using for
insipration: Black Jungle Vivarium
The awesome things about using the Great Stuff expanding foam are that 1) you can make some really natural looking setups and 2) you can actually use glass tanks and not worry too much about heat loss since this insulates the crap out of them (I'm going to cover the back, bottom and both sides). I'm going to journal as I go so hopefully if I don't f it up to bad, i'll post it up in a few weeks. Jon Jon Deason

another good place to look for enclosure ideas is dendroboard, and dartden. They are for PDF but those people get VERY creative with there enclosures, not tubs
there.
not sure if you are doing this but when doing in a glass tank, put brown silicone on the glass first to hide the yellow of the foam. makes it look a little better in my opinion

Yep, actually going to use black silicon. I've been spending alot of time on vivariumforum.com trying to pull from all of the best ideas.
Where in FL are you? I'm in Orlando. Jon Deason

Dendroboard is a great resource...lots of creativity with terrariums there!
I have done some of the insulation foaming for frog cages as jbgood mentioned. I can't remember which of the brands was best to use, but I've had several experiences where the foam doesn't actually cure for weeks. Some also have leachate that will kill your herps! Once your foam is cured, using clear silicon + peat moss makes a great surface. I used it in my exoterra to plant some cheesy pothos along the background! The insulation factor is pretty smart...I didn't think of that! |

The expanding foam that seems to be the one of choice is called Great Stuff. It comes in a couple of different types. From what I can tell the maximum
expanding type is the one's most use.
This is definitely going to be a very long project. First you have to coat most of the tank in silicon (GE type II), wait for that to dry, plumb the water features, put on the foam and background peices (wood, cork, etc.), wait for that to cure, build the false floor.... The list goes on and on. I figure with nights and weekends, I can get it done in a little over a month. But since this kind of thing never goes as planned (ask JB about his bathroom project), I'm actaully figuring 2 and a half months. I've going to do a full build journal and will post it up here when done. Sorry jbgood5, not trying to hijack your thread. I love the idea of incorporating this into a furniture grade enclosure. I'd love to compare notes with you. Jon Deason

I can't remember if GS was my favorite, though like you said, they do use it alot.
Speaking of expansion, one brand has kindof "what you see is what you get" (once sprayed it retains firm). Others tend to continue expanding after you carefully design and spray, and its a $@@@@!!!

Yeah I live in Orlando also. Off Semoran near the airport. I would love to compare notes and ideas on building enclosures. Its an odd hobby not many
appreciate...lol. Send me a PM and we can bounce ideas off each other. I have built several others, mostly for Bearded Dragons which are different, tile
grout rather than silicone and eco-earth. I have also looked at the PDF enclosures and REALLY like what some of them have done. Talk about elaborate. Do you
have PDFs or just snakes? Look forward to having someone to bounce ideas off.

I just used the under counter lights for your kitchen. I used the round halogen ones. They are like $9.99 a piece or 6 for $32.99 at lowes. I will have to
play with the number to see if i can't use them for both heat and light. I have two in there now and will see how that works when the doors are on. I
have used the small ( 8" or 12" i think) florecents (sp) in the past.
