Unattended Chondro |

How long have you guys left your chondro unattended due to vacation, work, etc? I am going on vacation for about 4 days and want to know if that is too long.
I basically don't know anyone who would be able to look after it while I am away. I am worried that the humidity will get too low in the 4 days or any
malfunctions with the helix.

You had someone mist the cage every few days?

4 days is nothing. That is of course unless your chondros are always kept at near saturated levels of moisture/humidity. If that's the case, you first need
to address your husbandry practices. I typically only mist my enclosures every 4 to 5 days anyway unless an animal is in shed. I suggest misting very well the
last minute before you leave and enjoy your vacation. Your animals will be fine.

If leaving unattended for a few days I would suggest adding a second water dish to the enclosure.
If your snakes are anything like mine, pooping in the water is a favorite thing for them to do. This will make it always possible for your snake to continue having clean water to drink while you are away and help keep up the humidity. |

It seems that very few keepers actually mist on a 24 hour cycle as per Maxwell's routine as outlined in "The More Complete Chondro". The crucial
question is, are you providing a 24 hour humidity cycle by some other means (wetting of the substrate, manipulating dew points through temp. fluctuations etc),
or are you not providing a 24 hour cycle at all?

I mist daily as well but I live up here in Vermont where it is very dry. Plus Our house has forced hot air heat.

I live in Rhode Island and I mist daily . I have base board heat so it gets very dry my tanks are dry every morning. it all depends on how you mist your
animals. I use G-Maxwell system

Other than to encourage drinking, is there any evidence to suggest these animals need humidity other than to assist with sheds?
I've never seen any. I only mist (adults) when in shed. |

I been away for a week with no problems. I do normally mist everyaday but I'm not religious about it. 2-3 days isn't crazy around here. In the
prolonged periods I have slacked, I have had RIs or RI type symptoms pop up. To me, this is considered excessive drying out and hasn't happened around here
in years.
Bottom line, I prefer every day. But you'll be fine on vacation.

I mist once a day, right before I go to work. It usually drys out by the next day before I spray again. I will add a second water bowl though just in case
and give it a good spray before I leave for vacation.
Cathy -- Cm.07.45 is doing really well. I used your picture up on iHerp but I got to get some updated pictures of it up though. Its starting to get a few white scales coming in along the sides. Thanks everyone, my first time going on vacation since I got the Chondro. |

I mist every night. Mine drink off their bodies on a regular basis. They all shed fine. Probably would anyway. I don't saturate the cage. Usually I just
mist them and a bit of the substrate. I have someone take care of that while I'm gone if I go on vacation. Usually a neighbor.

Julian.....I've read books that say their lungs need air that is high in humidity for some reason (don't remeber) but there is definitly other why they
need it........I've don 17 days, two water bowls, and an automatic zoomed misting machine that probabley lasted the first six days.....oh and..... Julian,
just out of curiosity did you ever put yourself on the rain*day dream list? peace out ya'll.....

Other than to encourage drinking, is there any evidence to suggest these animals need humidity other than to assist with sheds?Julian, isn't the fact that they have evolved in a high humidity climate evidence that they require high humidity? I'm not an expert on the principles of evolution so that is a genuine question. thanks Stuart |

I guess i dont live in a dry area as it rains most weekly here in Seattle. I mist my Chondros (adults) when they are in shed or when ever i "feel like
it". I dont notice a problem with it at all. I know a lot of breeders who employ the same pratice with out fault. To each their own and i personaly never
reccomend not misting your animals.
Though i would argue the evolution comment... hell we have "evolved" to inculde meat as a part of our diet.. and i've lived a very healthy life with out touching the stuff for 14 years. Take that Darwin! On Safari... no im not on the Rain x Day Dream Clutch.. but they sure do look sweet (my top 3 picks for pairings this year). Feel free to pick me up one |
