Hello all, About this time last year I had to get rid of all my snakes due to moving out on my own, and I couldn't find a condo that would let me have
snakes. I thought I gave them to someone who would be trustworthy, but I was wrong. Since then, my Chondro has died, and my two rat snakes suffer from severe
dehydration. I don't think they have had water or food in 2-3+ months, one had 3 sheds left in its tank when I went to see them! Anyway, I have them back,
temporarily, and I had heard somewhere that you can give snakes Gatorade to help rehydrate them. Any suggestions? Right now they are in clean cages with fresh
water, i'm going to give them a couple days to settle in before attempting a feeding. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Russ

I have used Pedyialyte. Unflavored. You can get it at any drugstore in the aisle that has baby food/diapers, etc. Don't give them unlimited access to hydration. many years ago I took in an animal that was severely dehydrated, and I gave him a huge bowl of water to drink/soak in. I think that is what killed him....way too much fluid at once after being without for so long. Hope that helps. Kim "Wow, that is a hot snake, I would definitely hit that."

Kim-
My wife is a marketing director for Abbott Labs (they manufacture Pedialyte) and Pedialyte is one of her brands. I'll be sure and let her know that she should consider running a campaign through her ad agency about the hydrative value for serpents (lol). I got a kick out of that.

I am not sure gatorade would be a good idea, but pedialyte seems like a better route. Never used it for my herps, but I don't see why it would not work.
Herps in the wild obviously go through dry spells, and do alright once they get get to a source of water. If you go the water only route, just offer little
amounts at a time so as not to shock their systems like Kim explained. Sorry to hear the bad news. Hope all works out.

I don't have a lot of experience with rehydrating a snake, but... I have used diluted gatorade for my dearded dragon before. Seemed to perk him up just
fine. I would try cutting either Pedialyte or Gatorade with water before administering. I agree with Bryan, not too much! Like horses, they may not know
when to quit. Consult a vet when in doubt. And btw, Blue Beauties are one of my favorite rat snakes! If it needs a new home......!Good luck.
