You're right Randy, which is why many serious zoo-based conservation programs will not accept animals into the program just because they come from a zoo.
I managed the Dendrobates azureus conservation breeding program for a while. This program could have been started with captive D. azureus
since there are thousands of them in captivity, but who knows what is in their backgrounds so a collection trip to Surinam was made. Our own MVFer Robin S.
was a member of the collecting team. Poor Robin had to endure attacks from giant ticks and the antics of Jack Cover and George Grall on that trip and it was
all for nothing since it turns out D. azureus is nothing more than a color variant of D. tinctorius. D. azureus is no longer a
recognized species and the studbook was closed.
