will im doing this poll to see what you guys think
in third world coutries like Guatemala there are no frozen rodent dealers, so i have to kill my own mice. which do you think is the most humane way to kill a mouse? (Total Votes: 35) - Closeddrow it (takes about 2 minutes for it to die) (1 / 2.9%) throw it hard against a hard surface(dies instantly) (12 / 34.3%) crush its head with the thongs(takes them like one minute to die) (0 / 0%) other (22 / 62.9%) |

I've always held it by its tail and flicked it a few times as hard as I could on the back of the head. Gives them an aneurism (spelling?) and sometimes
they bleed through their noses, but they die in about 30 seconds.

It isn't legal to drown any vertebrates here in Denmark - I sure don't hope it's legal to do where you live eather.. awful death.
.. and if it takes about 1 minute for the animal to die when you use tongs, you're not doing it right. I don't kill the rodents my self anymore, but did it the first 7 years of keeping reptiles and anything from medium sized mice up to rabbits was killed by cervical dislocation. You break the neck by holding the head back, using your thumb or a tong and pull the tail untill you hear the dislocation. You might do better if you pull the back of the rodents body and not the tail - I've tried to pull the skin of the tail a couple of times in my eager. |

Dry ice and a bucket for a group of them... or put one in a plastic bag and thump it against the side of bath tub basin (incase of mess).

Anything that takes longer than a couple seconds is wrong. Drowning is horrible.
I haven't had to kill a mouse in a long time, but when I did, I pinched it right behind the head with the tongs, held it on a hard surface, and snapped its tail back over its head, basically hyper-arching its back backwards. This breaks the back and the mouse dies instantly. No mess, no blood, no lingering death, and no special tools or gasses needed. Instant. Andrew |

I use CO2 chamber to euthanize my mice.
Please, don't ever consider drowning, it doesn't matter what country, it is cruel and unnecessary. Cervical dislocation is second choice, I have been known to throw newborn pinkies against hard surface, they do not die quickly in CO2. |

I usually just start telling them stories about my childhood and they kill themselves within 30 minutes.
Seriously though, tail hold bang against hard surface. If you do it right they die very quickly. j

CO2 is the fastest and most humane if you don't put too much in too fast. The rats and mice I kill with it are unconscious in under 30 seconds and dead in
3 minutes. You can easily make CO2 chambers. Otherwise, I've dispatched injured rodents by smacking their heads against a hard surface.

As a labratory animal technician I deal with euthanizing mice on a daily basis. For this reason I have the availablity of more methods than the average
basement breeder, but I agree that CO2 and cervical dislocation are the best, and really should be the only, methods for euthanasia in adult mice. Cervical
dislocation is very effective, but it takes practice. Also, like Tine mentioned, make sure grab the mouse by the base of the tail to avoid pulling the skin
off. By far the easiest, most effective, and least stressful to the mouse would be CO2 or dry ice. At the university we have a CO2 chamber, but putting dry ice
in a container and sealing it will have the same effect. I would suggest, though, to avoid exposing the mouse directly to the dry ice, by placing it in a
seperate container and allowing it to slowly seep into the mouse's chamber. This will also reduce the stress of the animal as it should sedate the animal
before it actually kills it. Just my two cents and I hope it helps.

Cervical dislocation(clean break of the skull away from the neck), or C02 gas. I typically(but its rare that I have to kill a live rodent) use the first
option. Place mouse/rat on flat hard surface, hold by base of tail, place pencil/dowel/something similar at the back of the skull, press downwards hard and
give a fast firm jerk on the tail. If you do it right, there should be barely a twitch.

I flick them on the head to "stun" them, then quickly pinch down HARD on the back of the neck to sever the spine.
Man, I haven't had to do that in a loooooooooooooong time.

The herp industry is a target for many people so I personally think it would be best if the AVMA guidelines on euthanasia were "officially" adopted
by the industry. You can find them here: http://www.avma.org/issues/animal_welfare/euthanasia.pdf
It's an unfortuante fact that the reason some people get into herps is to take pleasure in watching them kill rodents (just check out YouTube to verify). This is the kind of stuff that makes many people view bans on keeping herps as a positive move. The herp industry's own worst enemy are many of the people involved in it. However, it seems to me that for the most part, GTP keepers are well above the average in terms of representing the herp industry in a good light. Will |

Will, FYI, there was a long and intense debate thread a while back about the AVMA guidelines on reptile euthanasia and
by a clear majority the participants in that thread felt that the vets were clueless and the AVMA consensus was flawed.

Cleve,
Yes, I recall the debate and am aware of some of the disagreements some have in regard to their herp euthanasia guidelines. I should have been more specific and said adopt the AVMA guidelines in terms of rodent euthanasia. Will |
