After much testing, development, and blood sweat and tears, I'm happy to announce the official launch of
http://www.iherp.com
iHerp is a place for you to manage your reptile collection, online and completely free. Some of the features that are there now are
-
Full inventory management
-
Customizable animal groups (to help manage your collection)
-
Full animal galleries
-
Full tracking
-
Full breeding tracking
-
BREEDING LOANS! Loan an animal to another iHerp user, and they can update what's going on with your animal (David Newman has been doing this with my Cyclops girlie, and it's amazing to be able to see everything that went on with that breeding)
-
Blog/Journal to record what's going on with your collection
How many times have you had to ask someone about their collection? Wouldn't it be great if you could have your collection at your fingertips? Animals you've had, sold, died, are breeding, whatever. And how many times is lineage lost, is tracking lost? Say goodbye to all of that.
The system is ENTIRELY built from
scratch - which is great because this is a truly species based database where everything can interconnect. I looked at some other software (nuke, and a couple
of other gen tools), but nothing was really tailor made to the intricacies of animal management. Not to mention the fact that anything I want to add, I can,
because it's 100% customizable. Did someone say "feature request"? Plus, I've been coding web applications since Al Gore started the internet
in 1995 with his series of tubes.
At any rate, this has really snowballed into the wonderful beginnings (or midpoint, this has been under wraps for 2 years now) to a long term project. In the not too distant future, the lineage will be complete, and transferring and selling animals through iHerp (with their tracking intact, photo galleries, everything) will be a piece of cake. Whether you're a dealer, breeder, or just an individual with one snake.
I'd like to thank all of the people that have been testing and working with the system over the past year. You have been inspirational, and the positive feedback is great. It keeps me energized, and I can't thank you enough.
Go ahead and check it out, kick the tires, and help me to eradicate any bugs that you can find. I'm working on this full time, so this has become my job. Since this is the "official" launch, please register at the site, work on putting your animals in there and getting familiar with how it works, and lets see if we can break 1000 animals by the end of the week. We're almost halfway there already, so get in and show off your collection!
Thanks to everyone for the great support,
Aaron
