OT, DUW: Field Herping in Costa Rica

Just returned from a week-long run in the field.

Unfortunately, this took place in the dead heat of the dry season, and our herp list clearly reflected this.

One evening, we did get the pleasure of the first rain in over a month.

Fantastic photos and I'm sooooo jealous. This will be one place I will visit at some point!! I'm trying to get a hold of Costa Rican Snail Eaters without success, but if I could just run down there and even see one in it's natural habitat....oh, my dream!

I wish too! I spent hours and hours each night searching every buttress, checking holes and rummaging the leaf litter seeking the snakes.

Oddly enough, two other (snake haters) mistakenly ran into the Bothrops! Other than that, only 2 other snakes =(

Definitely a trip to telemanca / osa in the wet season next time around.

amazing pictures joe.looks like a great time .i was in costa rica in the "rainy season"and it didn't stop raining for more than an hour the whole time i was there .

Excellent pics Joe. Found some new desktop backgrounds for sure. The fiance and I hope to spend our honeymoon somewhere in Costa Rica...maybe do a little herping while there. Any location suggestions?

rob - did you come down this way yet?

James/Mikela, its a great place to go no matter what. You might get a little burnt out if you stay in some of the dry forest areas, but LaSelva / Monteverde / Telemanca are great. Osa is the mecca! We went to five different places in a little over a week, happy to give you the itenerary if youd like.
