Hey Everyone,

Just thought I would get this off my chest, I posted some pics about 50 days ago of my first clutch of chondro eggs,

Well two days ago when I was at school, the thermostat malfunctioned and cooked all of them except for one lone survivor who is barely holding on.

I am pretty devastated.

If the little guy makes it I will post pics.

Sorry to hear that!

These things happen from time to time and a malfunction like that has nothing to do with any neglect or poor husbandry on your part.

OMG, I am so sorry to hear that!!! To come so close and lose them at the end due to malfunction is a nightmare. What kind of thermostat were you using? Any clues as to what may have gone wrong?

Damn, I'm terribly sorry to hear of this -- major big time bummer. I'm curious if the problem was your thermostat as a whole, or whether water impurities (in the form of precipitants) from the RH (moisture) hindered the thermostat's sensitivity? and as a result, kept it in the "on" position?
Either way, I'm terribly sorry.

Nick, That's just awful. Like Cathy said, it must be hard to come so close. I know it's probably easier said than done but try to keep a positive attitude and possibly use this as a learning experience. I'm really sorry man,

Nick....do not give up on that one egg. Last year my incubator failed on me too, 105 degrees was registered, for what exact period of time was unknown, at least 6-8 hours at that temp. Lost almost the entire clutch, but hatched out a number of babies. Two are now alive and thriving. We all are easy to state the good news on the raising of these critters, not so much when things go bad, it happens to all of us more than you think.

That's gotta sting - worse by far than having them go South one at a time. You were a few days away from hatch !!

I'm curious what thermostat you used. The "On/Off" type that Bean Farm sells as "Alife" or "Newtek" have failed for me occasionally. I replace them, and they often work if I try them later. It's like the temp detection element gets overheated or something, and then recovers if given a rest ?

Rich, I'm curious why you think that precipitates could be at fault. Condensed moisture should be essentially distilled. Have you reaons to believe that precipitates are the culprit, or is it just a hunch ?

I understand what you are saying, as condensed moisture "if and when" distilled should be theoretically pure. However, in these cases it's not being distilled by a specific boiling point, but instead at atmospheric pressure. So I've always wondered about various salts being mildly chelated. The "only" times (twice) that I have ever had a thermostat malfunction was one, due to a kink in the probe (my fault as an enclosure was pushed against it) and two, when the actual probe sensor became contaminated (with either oils from my fingers?...or "something"). The problem was easily resolved by cleaning the sensor area with a damp cloth.

Thanks to everyone for your support. Makes dealing with this alot easier.

I was using a big apple herp cabinet style incubator w a big apple t-stat. I am not sure what happened. The unit is 4+ years old so maybe that has something to do with it? But either way the whole thing is going in the garbage.

The little guy is still hanging in there.
