I'm starting to price out hatchling racks for neonate chondros, and was wondering which ones you all use. I've been looking at the ones offered by Jim Scharporn and Repti-Racks, but I'm not exactly sure what size comes recommended by all of you. If you guys use a different setup as opposed to a rack, I'd love to hear about that too! Photos of everyone's setups would be great.

Also, how many tubs would be a good starting point? I know the average number of eggs listed in Maxwell's book is 18 - 25 per clutch, but is it realistic to expect that many? I don't think I'd be trying for more than 2 clutches at any given time (at least in the foreseeable future), but I want to make sure I purchase enough tubs to cover ALL the potential youngsters.

Thanks for any info... I am getting more and more excited about this project!

Considering you have about 49 days from lay to hatch, you can wait and see what you get in the first clutch before ordering a rack. That's what I did.

I also use Animal Plastics with Sterlite tubs because they have the lip inside to set the perches on.

The animal plasctics racks are great. The problem I'm having is with the actual Sterilite tubs. They aren't "straight" across the top, in other words, many of the tubs dip, or sag in the middle leaving a gap that I've already had baby Mex-Mex escape out of. The problem isn't the rack. So don't underestimate the importance of the tubs you will use. Makes me miss the old Phillips plastic shoeboxes with lids. Which I still have a ton of.

I recently received an AP hatchling rack and also did not care for the way the tubs fit. I decided to try the Sterilite #1642 which is also a 6qt tub. Fits perfectly with no gap - plus it costs almost $0.75 less per tub where I buy them.

I use a Habitat Systems rack and have nothing but wonderful things to say about it. I do believe the tubs are VERY important and for the couple dollars more that the Cambro/polycarb tubs cost, they are well worth the extra cost initially. Get a few spare tubs and it will help keeping care of neonates so much easier.

There are no ledges inside these restaurant style tubs, but that is part of the beauty of them, very smooth inside and very easy to clean. They have the benefit of being clear also so you can see inside the tubs without having to open them. I use a tic-tac-toe type of perch that leans inside the tubs (just copying Lord Walder's setup here) and they are very easy to remove for cleaning and to look at the babies up close.

I believe that other rack manufacturers can/do make racks to fit these tubs also. I'm not sure who else does this though.

Cathy, I *love* the look of that rack! The clear tubs look just awesome. I'm definitely going to look into it - thank you for posting!

OK, I checked out the Habitat Systems web page and I'm unable to access their arboreal rack gallery. They also don't list any prices on their site. Can I ask you how much it cost to have your rack built (including the tubs and heat), what the turnaround time was, and how it is heated?

I recently purchaced a baby rack from herpenclosures.com (sterilite 1752 6qt econmy rack) and i love it. What made me choose this rack is that he uses belly heat which i think helps the evaporation process so the tub is not constantly wet.

I use the baby rack from herpenclosures as well and it is notthiing but the best. I had it for a few months now and I have notthing bad to say about it. That rack is one of the strongest built racks I've ever seen. I just recently purchaced a rack from PVC Cages, and I'm little worried about the back heat cause I never use it before. I'm used to underbelly heat cause it is the only method I've been using to heat racks. I guess I'll see how it works.

Hi:

Another option to going out and purchasing a rack system that you might end up not liking is to start with something a little bit less purpose-built, similar to what I use. I purchased a "some-assembly-required" rack system from Lowes (actually I have several of them) and use one as my baby 'rack'. I adjusted the height of the shelving to suit the size of containers I was using (see pic) and for very little money (I added Flexwatt heating and a heat controller) I was up and running. I've had the thing three years now and it's worked flawlessly for me.

This is a great system if you don't know how many eggs you're going to get as well. The shelving units are always available at Lowes (in my neighborhood, anyway) as are the containers. As soon as you get eggs, and they look like they are going to go full-term, you can go out and purchase more shelving and containers if you need to, and have them all set up in a couple of hours (assuming you keep flexwatt on hand, as I do).

If money is no object then Boaphile and Habitat Systems (and I'm sure there are others) would be two systems to consider.

I made my own. You can see them well and remove the perch with the snake. I am trying to get Vision to help produce a high end version .

This is my whole baby rack, I ordered it with a couple extra options, the heavy duty wheels, and shelf (excellent!), the tubs I ordered direct from "The Restaurant Source". It was truck shipped to my home and I believe the cost was about 3k total. The heat is run through the hollow core pvc and helix thermostat was included. I believe they build to order, but turnaround time was pretty quick. I believe I got mine in about 3 weeks after ordering.

Send an email or call and tell them how many tub size you'd like and they'll price it out with/out options and you can go from there. The customer service is A+ all the way. They are a little more expensive than some other systems but I think a good value for the money.

Something else that is cool about the particular size box that Cathy has is the fact that it is very versatile. You can fit 3 different tub sizes in that rack. The ones pictured are the smallest, and they also make double-wide and triple-wide versions. With the different tub sizes, you can house a wide age range of animals.

I have two vision racks that I really like. They are cheaper than most, and work very well. Sorry I don't have a pic. By the way, I love Cathy's rack, but it comes at quite a price.

Did I just say I love Cathy's Rack? Boy, I'm gonna be in trouble when I get to Cali this year. LOL

I use a rack I purchased from Jim Scharphorn. It has 15, 6 quart tums, and has back heat. Since i am challenged when it comes to fabricating anything, he put the perches in too. Right now I have only three tubs being used, and I am happy with it. The tubs hold humidity well. It was also affordable for me.

I have been using PM Herps racks for as long as i have been keeping snakes and they have worked out pretty well for me they are very space efficient and easy to clean
