Re: chondro eating a chondro picture

This goes back a ways..but I remember it as Dave Prada's clutch. A neo in a group in a hatchtub consumed a sibling and died a day or so later. At least that's how I remember it happening. I am guessing this was three or four years ago. The subject came up again about a year ago and turned into a multi-paged disagreement about something or other.
Maybe someone remembers better than I? Hope that helps some. --jb |

just spoke to dave prada and it wasn't him,he believes it may have been dave p in ca
don't want to start an up-roar. the situation is this. i sold 2 baby chondros to someone and he tells me that 1 ate the other and digested it ok. now his snakes are accessed by a number of people and i suspect that someone feed it a large meal and took his other baby. i just want to show him what a chondro looks like after eating another chondro of equal size. does anybody know how i can contact dave p in ca?? |

Re: Neonate eating sibling

I remember the post well. I made some comment about how keeping two neonates together was a bad ideal and the guy that posted thought I was attacking him. (That was not my intention) Him and his friends let me have it. I emailed the guy privately and let him know that I meant no disrepect and that if he took it wrong I apologize. He pretty much told me to screw off and refused my offer so I took my apology and left. I won't name the guy because it is over and done. I won't resurrect it for obvious reasons.
I would have suggested that you tell your friend that keeping neonates together is a really bad ideal, but since I got flamed the last time I suggested such a thing, better to just bite my lip and let someone else. |

I think it was Dave Patchen and his first (and last) batch of chondros.

If you read the post Oscar posted several people mention Dave Patchen's incident... I guess it did happen to him as well...

It was me.
Keith - are you saying I told you to screw off? I'd appreciate it if you looked back at the conversation and maybe re-phrase what you've just written to the chondro community. I still have my reply to you on my computer and can post it to jog your memory if you so desire. Regards, Nick. |

Alive and well as far as I know JB. He's with his new owner now and the last I heard he was doing great. A good feeder apparently!

Oh boy here we go again.
The term "screw off" is a slang term and is not in quotes and I did not name names. The politically correct way to put it is: I offered an apology and in my opinion, the apology was not accepted. I am perfectly OK with that, after all you can't be friends with everyone. It was long forgotten and I held no hard feelings about it. The computer is a very imperfect tool because it does not allow for all the subtle cues we use everyday for proper interpretation. Therefore misunderstandings can and do occur. I will apologize once again for anything said long ago that might have been misinterpreted as hurtful, and that anyone might still have hard feelings about after all this time. I've never knowingly attacked anyone on this forum - it's just not my style. If someone wants to flame me with the last words, go for it. Enough said.

Good pictures Eric. Your example is a good one of what to do should one animal consume another. Don't touch it, don't move the enclosure, don't fart, and it might keep the meal down.
I recall the two other threads with images when one animal consumed another as well as some without pictures long ago. Typically it seems a discussion initiates and some suggest induce a regurge while others suggest leaving the snake alone. In those two examples regurge of the consumed resulted in death to the consumer. There's another example of one hatchling consuming another in one of my old reptile symposium papers from the late 1970s. I forgot what happened in that example, but sure enough they will eat each other. WWJD

I've had a sub-adult constrict and eat half of a shed skin!
You know how some critters with a great feeding response will strike out at mere ghosts? This behavior can be triggered by movement in the room after lights out. Well one of my animals did such a thing and managed to snag a fresh shed that was still dangling in the enclosure. While the snake constricted the shed, I shook my head and reasoned that it would just let the shed go in short order. Instead it consumed about half of the skin before I realized what was happening! I intervened and cut of the unswallowed portion of skin. A week later or so, the skin was passed along with normal feces; the skin was undigested. Danny Brotto |
