Help- Rectal Prolapse |
Lead | |
|
Need any help I can find, with the fourth of july weekend I cannot find any vets. My female has a rectal prolapse, I have no idea what to do, I've heard
you can "push" it in. I really don't want to loose her. This happened last night right after she defected and I didn't notice it until this
morning. I'm really desperate for any help, maybe even a step by step pictorial on how to do it right, if anyone knows of any sources. Thank you for any
help in advance!

ok if your not experienced dont try to push it in, now i dont know to much about this and probably someone wiht more experience might help you more, but for
what i have heard, it is best to move the chondro to a plastic tub with a shallow amount of clean water in it, use just enough to keep the tub floor and the
prolapsed tissue wet, make a thick paste of powdered or granular sugar and water, and apply this paste directly to the swollen tissue, using an eyedropper or a
large syringe minus the needle. The sugar paste will help to draw moisture from the swollen tissue and reduce the swelling. Apply more sugar paste as the
animal moves around and dissolves the former applications. Do this for a few hours or overnight. (I GOT THIS FROM THE MAXWELL BOOK) it say's that this
treatment works some of the time and usually helps to reduce the swelling to the point that the tissue can be reinserted.
I really hope this will help, like i say maybe someone else mightl know a better technic, best of luck. Francisco

Ok I put her in a 5 gal bucket with shallow water in it, I'll add some table sugar later. I'm reading another a question from an iherp page and a few
people have recommended preparation H, seems like it's a substitute for the sugar paste and does the same thing. Looks like I'll be making a trip to
wal-mart.

Can I see a pic of the prolapse ,this way i can make a decision if you should try to get it back in. I have been really good at getting them back in ,I can
walk you through it over the phone .you can get my # from the link below

The biggest concern is that the tissue dried out overnight when you didn't notice it. This can lead to necrosis and the tissue will have to be removed. If
the tissue is in fact viable then it can be replaced and the animal should recover. When my female prolapsed (a small one) I immediately put her in some very
shallow water with a sugar paste. Preparation H can also be used to help shrink the tissues safely. My snake's prolapse reduced on it's own but as soon
as she perched at the vets, she reprolapsed. The vet ended up putting two stiches on each side of the cloaca to hold the tissue in. If the tissue on your snake
goes back, you can use a fabric bandaid and cover the cloaca to hold the tissue in. Let the bandaid come off on it's own. If necessary I would replace the
bandaid. The nice thing about the stiches was that any fecal matter or urates were able to pass and I soaked her daily. I've heard of people using the
blunt end of a sexing probe to push the prolapse back in. I wasn't confident enough to do it..plus I was freaking out. She was my favorite animal. I still
don't think I'd replace a prolapse unless it's very small or I have no other choice. I'd leave the animal without a perch if possible for a
couple of weeks at least. I waited a full month before offering the first food item...a very small mouse. Then I waited 2 weeks and offered another small
mouse. I soaked her every few days during this time and had the stiches removed after 2 weeks. After the second feeding I waited another 2 weeks and then
offered her a normal sized food item. Then I waited some more. She's never had an issue since, but I am extremely conservative with feeding now. I only
feed my snakes every 2-3 weeks and then it's an item the animals size and not much larger. She's gone almost 3 years since the prolapse and I will be
breeding her for the first time this year.

use ky gelee after applying the sugar paste and sometimes it will have enough lube to pull it self in either all of the way or a good bit

I put some table sugar in there, i'm not sure what sugar paste means, I guess a supersaturated solution of sugar in water? She looks really uncomfortable
inside the shallow water, every time I open the lid to check, she tries to escape as fast as possible. I'll put some preparation H in the morning and see
how it goes from there, maybe I will put some ky jelly in the afternoon on it and try to push it in.
I cant get a good shot of it, but it doesn't look as bad as some pics i've seen. The problem is that this snake has a bad tail kink and so i'm afraid it will worsen the problem even if i'm successful at reinserting it. |

you can put a low perch in the plastic tub with her and she will hang her tail down in the water. Sugar paste is just a water and sugar mixture. You put a
couple table spoons of sugar and add a little bit of water and stir it up. it will be a very gloopy and globby mix. Spoon it on the prolapse and then add prep
h or ky. My biak had to go a couple days without treatment because i couldnt find a herp vet near me. When i found one he said their wasnt much dead tissue at
all because i kept it lubed and kept the swelling down.
