hi everyone,
my girlfriend and i went down to wichita for a good freind of mines wedding and went to my stomping ground. almost two months ago the sedgwick county zoo
hatched out two baby komodos. the are the first parthenogenic hatching in the us, and the second that i am aware of. the first, i could be wrong was in the
uk last year? im not sure on that. i thought that this was the first bu i was told that it has happened before.
the two adult females that the zoo has, has laid eggs before. in the three years that i was a zookeeper both of the females laid four cluthes of eggs, they
all ended up going bad. we tried to incubate them, but there was no development. the last clutch that was laid while i was there, showed development, but did
not hatch.
i found chris, who took my place when i left the zoo and he was nice enough to show me the babies and some new animals that the zoo has gotten in since i have
left. so the following pics are of the two babies and some of the new stuff the zoo has. hope you enjoy! i know that i did!
now for some of the new species that the zoo is working with. the new curator, nate from the fort worth zoo,
is a huge amphibian guru and these newts are cool has hell! the scz is the only zoo working with this species, as of now. and their breeding program is
working quite well. they had many larve and huundreds of eggs that were developing. i cant remember the name of the newts, so i cant tell you lol.
up nesxt is one of my favorite turtle species, the fly river turtle. theis guy is awesome! he is so cute! lol
the last pics are of some pancake tortises that are soo cool, again one of my favorites. and of a new
ceacieloen species that they are working with, cant remember the common name. and i had a great shot, imo, of one of the female jamacian iguanas, she is out of
the breeding program due to a cyist that she had in one side of her reproductive tract. so she has one functional side, but she is so mean that she will not
let any male get near her lol.
and last but not least, is rocket. he is around 100 years old or so. he came into the us in 1932, but there
is no data to say if he was a hatchling or juvi. he is 550 lbs and is the sweetiest animal. i love him to death!
