I think an open mind is the only important factor here.
Myself, being the one to raise the hell about it here, am admittedly only "somewhat" concerned. Those folks who have already assured themselves that its not an issue and are"not concerned" are the only ones I might worry about! |

Thank you!
I was very curious to see the results of this poll! Rolo |

At this point, I'm somewhat concerned. I don't have any plastic cages now except one Vision cage that I use to house any loaner animals. The occasional
tub is used as well when I have extra animals to house.

Meg- that must suck for the loaner animal! (Just kidding. Well somewhat, vision and tubs are not PVC. Those leak BPA instead!)
Despite the Will's most recent update on plasticized PVC, there are also several accounts of bird and human ingestion and inhalation of "regular" / closed cell / whatever PVC. Maybe some of the European keepers can chime in on this- but I have heard there is a movement for many countries across the pond to gain status as "PVC free". "LEED" (environmentally friendly) construction certification in the US now requires that there be no PVC. On the other hand, a pvc pipe running through the tropics can differentiate whether or not you get to drink. It's the fairly recent epidemiological (people dying) studies like this one tend to leave me wondering: http://www.jstor.org/pss/3700401 This is not factory workers "stirring the mix" or breathing the dust, it's regular people spending the night in a room with PVC-based carpets. While this recycled PVC carpet looks to be a cool solution to burning PVC waste...turns out it might irritate your respiratory tract ! The biggest red flag, for me, is the link between pvc exposure and respiratory system problems. These "respiratory infections" seem to be a recurring theme here. I'm curious- have those of you with these problems actually had a vet do the WBC counts to verify bacterial infection? Unfortunately, who knows?!? |

I chose "don't know." That's because I do not know for for certain. I do know that Vision cages are made of HDPE and do not leach BPA. I
also know that Vision cages are unattractive because I have a number of them.
I also know that getting any government involved now on this issue is a backwards step. The market and an informed/aware public is always a preferable choice to dictates from any politician--especially the likes of Sen. Schumer of NY who is the most disgusting, grandstanding, power-grabbing, always-has-the-answer-the-already-solved-problem douche-bag. For the record, I am Pro-Cork! I am currently typing this in a custom cork fabric suit and hope to someday be typing this on a cork keyboard in front of a cork computer. Joe, please come over sometime and take some shots of these snakes here. I can also provide you with lot of useful dirt on Will. He had a Sweet Mullet in the 80s and now has a van that he somehow makes money with:

Hey John, sorry I guess I had that one wrong- saw some ads for Vision "Polycarbonate" cages on kingsnake and just made the false assumption that
were the case!
Yeah, at this point I don't think theres much of a role for the government with this. Definitely have to come up at some point! I'll be out till June but maybe then? |
