O.K. ... look at this photo, and tell me if I am full of ca-ca (or if I am looking at a chondro full of ca-ca) ...

Now ... to me, this looks like an ovulation .... BUT - she just shed a week or so ago, and she did not defacate at that time ... however, since last night, she is BIGGER ... and usually, poop doesn't expand, right?! The other fly in this ointment is, she hasn't been with a male IN OVER 4 MONTHS ... and then, we saw NO action between them ... and she has shed twice SINCE then. So what the heck IS this?!?! I don't want to succumb to deluded, wishful thinking!!! This is my Kofiau girl, BTW, who was with Puff, my Powder/Head boy ... hmmmmmm?!?!?!?!?!

Kathy - who has been bitten BAD by the chondro bug!! HELP!!!!

i have a snake who only poops when it sheds which sucks becuase I only feedit 2or3 times and it starves till shed and by the way Kathy your girl is a beauty.

Poop does not expand, but sometimes its friend gas comes over to play. I have a couple animals that get gassy a couple days after I feed them. It is midbody and looks very much like an ovulation (minus the constant shifting of position). One of them even "burps". First time I heard it I thought it was an RI. Hope yours is just eggs. LOL.

I would definitely say the snake needs to poop. From what I've seen, any snake doesn't ovulate around the vent and it is more of a mid-bodied swelling. You are correct that poop doesn't swell, but like mentioned it can cause gas or even more likely the buildup of urine as this can't be passed and possible kidney stress. What I would suggest is to massage around pinching lightly starting at the vent and moving upward. You are going to feel something like a small rock most likely very close to the vent. This is a calcium deposit. Pinch slowly behind the rock rolling your fingers towards the vent. This will push the calcium deposit out. If you aren't comfortable doing this, go to a vet.

I noted gas build up after feeding while using lower to moderate basking and back ground temps.
Once I raised both the problem has gone away.

Not sure what is going on with your girl.
If you have some time line pics I would gladly look them over and give you an opinion.<<any pics taken up to 8 weeks ago in order to today>>
I have had males stop breeding females and the females continue to feed up to 7 weeks before going off feed and showing follicle development.
I have also had a female feed 2 weeks prior to ovulation and lay 25 fertile eggs.
So it is possible your girl is in the process of producing eggs or preparing to blow up the cage.

Interesting observation. Now that you mention it, this is only something I have observed over the last year or so. I changed my husbandry protocol this last year to include a year round night time drop to 75F. I went back and checked my records and the two animals that do this are ones that prefer cooler temps. Maybe I will bump that low up a little. I know some people go lower year round, but prior to this I had been using a constant temperature system (with a gradient, of course). Thanks for the note. And don't laugh at the fact that I record my animals location on a daily basis. I am a dork, what can I say?

Greg, temps are around 85 for her all the time. let me just assure you, she normally looks like this ...

Hopefully, you can see a big difference?! Her last poo was end of March, and her last meal was before that ... then she went off feed, and then shed on April 14th. Kept refusing food, and then ..... THIS. And she is on the heat panel side of the cage, upper limb, and looking very uncomfortable. I am in FL for a week right now, so cannot do a lot myself, but if there is something you believe my petsitter could do or should do ...? Please let me know!!! Carrie, thanks much for the input ... I have never had anything like this before (of couse, it's CHONDROS!!) so if it's gas ... holy cow, she is going to blow, Lucy!!! I just hope not ... vacation timing is SUCKY!!!

No worries, I record basking spot temps, back ground temps, and cool side temps periodically to keep things in check as my room dynamic shifts through out the year.
I never really worry about what temps they are choosing just the temps available to them.
Just an interesting note to add to this almost hijacked thread <<sorry Kathy>> I have several animals that will bask for days on end with no night drop.
<<I offer no night drop at all unless the animals are being paired for breeding, but they do get a wider gradient at night>>
By the 3rd or 4th day these animals shoot at 98+ with a IR thermometer, I have even recorded temps in the triple digit range.
To add to this the two animals that do this are females and it is either after a large meal or during a shed cycle.
Last thought, I believe the gas build up is CO2 brought on by the lowered metabolic rate causing slower digestion.

You know I keep telling myself I should post more of the temp stuff I am doing but I just never do it unless it is in someones thread.

I say watch and wait!
If it is follicles then she should ovulate and deposit eggs, if it is gas and poo then someone may need a gas mask to clean the cage!

was, as my petsitter informed me this evening, "turts the size of great dane turts!" - which made me laugh for minutes on end, and then be grateful that SHE cleaned up the mess!!! She said Shalia looks like the others now, so I guess that means my hopes for anything other than dung were doused. *sigh* But at least, my girl has GOT to feel better, and what on earth caused such a ... well, build-up is beyond me!! Thanks to all who responded, and this was definitely an interesting deal!!

Thanks for the update. I am glad to hear that Shalia was able to pass all of that on her own. That's a good petsitter you've got there. You'd better get her a good souvenir from your trip.
