Wicked Stupid Question......... |

|
How long do you guys think a chondro can live without perching? I mean if you forced it to live in a completey empty enclosure and only misted, would it live a
normal life or would it freak out in a week and just die?

I suppose it would survive. Probably depends upon the animal. Many would become stressed enough to end up with secondary infections and die from that. It would
be cruel to do this anyway, but I'm sure there are people out there who house just like that and the animals survive.

I actually saw a research paper where they measured cortisol levels in an emerald that was deprived of it's perching habitat. It's been quite a few
years, but I think there was an initial deprivation stress but the animal adapted decently over a few months.
Of course, probably not the smartest idea to evoke this from your pets |

Just out of curiosity, why are you asking? You can put a perch in virtually anything if you put your mind to it...
To answer your question... As long as the temps are in the acceptable range I think the animal will be fine... The only thing I would worry about would be bacteria on the bottom of this thing your asking about... As for it being cruel... I don't think so... Chondro's will hunt from the ground in the wild, in fact they sometimes stay on the ground for days in the same spot waiting for a meal to run by... I think Brie might have the video of a Cape York Chondro snapping at a moth, while hunting from the ground, at night, in Australia and it was grounded for a few days... David Wilson set up his camera just for kicks to see what he night see on the camera at night... I am pretty sure I have seen my animals do this same thing... I have even feed them from the ground if thats where they desire to be when the dinner bell rings... None of mine have filed a complaint yet... Just my opinion...

Well Shiloh I'm not asking because I'm planning on doing it to my animals. I love these things so I want them to be happy amd I paid a lot of money
for em so I want them to be alive too. It just occured to me that when it actualy comes time to move, they're the only thing that's actually going to
go in my car, which means that I'm going to have to tip the enclosure on to its side to stick it in the car, which means that they won't have perches
for the duration of the trip, which maybe two or three days, which mean that I am actualy planning on doing it to my animals, but not more than a couple of
days.

Have you considered putting them in tubs or pillow case bags in a cooler for the 3 day drip, rather then leaving them in the cages? Not sure how big your cages
are...

So just through them in pillow cases in a cooler and they're ok? Seems more drastic than loss of perches......but I guess that's how they were shipped
to me in the first place..

Thats also how a lot of people get them to shows... I think they would be less stressed in a pillow case... But once again, the temps need to be good...
