MVF Post Breeder

First, how do you tell when yellow neonates are in shed? In the Complete Chondro all Greg pretty much says is " its impossible"( for inexperienced keepers).I would assume hes about to shed seeing as the breeder informed me his last shed occured around 6 weeks ago. Ive noticed a bit of paleness around his neck, could that be a sign?
Second, What do you do about them and newspaper? Mine has a blackish tinge on parts of his face from the ink... are there any other cheap readily available substitutes? Should I be worried about the ink( I read it was soy based and shouldnt be harmful)?

I look at the eyes, you will be able to see them get a bit dull
as for substrate, I use papertowels I normally use in the kitchen.

Ditto on the paper towels. Also, Neos will more times than not demonstrate head swelling prior to molting. That's what I look for.

I always assumed that ink eventually rubs off/fades out and will slough off with an old shed. As you get to know your snake better you'll be better able to recognize when it is in shed, both from the dulling of body color and the ever so slight cloudiness in the eyes.

I go purely on behavior with any of the chondros. It's very hard to see blue in these thin skinned animals. Usually mine become very quiet, perch in one spot and don't move much. Then I know they are going into shed. Unless I get them outside in the light to really see the dull colors or eyes, there's not much to go on. The red babies are a little easier, but the adults are all difficult.

Funny Meg, I have no problem at all when it comes to visibly recognizing that my adults are in shed. The dull and cloudy appearance is as obvious as with other species. Perhaps its just my animals, or perhaps I'm just that in tune with them (a frightening thought).

I don't even have to see if they are dull. They could just be entering the blue phase. They just act differently. Even the babies are the same way. Less active, most often sitting on the warm side.
