Rats of equal (or nearly so) size of adult mice have a lower calcium level than fully adult mice. They also have a lot of milk fat due to still being nursed by the mother.

I do feed mice exclusively to my chondros. Occasionally I'll double up on mice to females recovering from or going into a breeding season. Mostly they get one mouse every 7 to 10 days. Yes, they are still hungry but that's ok. At one time I fed small rats to any of the animals that were large enough to handle them and had poor fertility, lots of tail hanging and other health problems. Since switching to all mouse diet's everything has improved. I know there are folks who feed rats with good success so it's obviously not 100% but I know I"m not going back to rats.
