Hi everyone this is my first time at this site and I just took an interest in snakes about a month ago, so sorry if I ask something stupid. But is it possible
to have green tree pythons as pets? I browsed a few topics and it looked like some of you do. I didn't think you could really have one as a pet due to them
spending most of their life in trees so I was just wondering how you guys manage owning them in captivity.

And have any of you been bitten by one? just curious...

You just need to define what is a pet to you. No Chondros aren't cuddly and fuzzy and not everyone of them can be handled. On the other hand with the
right one you can have a pet snake that can be taken out during the day and to me is more interesting then a ball python, not trying to slam balls this is
just me.
Every since I was a kid I wanted Chondros and Emerald tre boas. But back then there wasn't much info and everyone said they died easy. Well things have
come along...

I agree. The only snake I have ever wanted was a chondro, so I got a chondro! He is AWESOME, and like I said earlier in theis thread... I have geckos species
that are harder to care for and much more skittish. If you want a chondro... get one! You won't be sorry. You may look a little foolish asking some of the

LOL!!! Awww, come on! If you want a fuzzy 'pet' that will do tricks, come when you call it, or mimmick your voice... then get a dog, cat, or budgie!
When we think of pets, we think of petting them. Well, I pet my chondro every time I open his cage to mist or clean. Sometimes, I open his cage just to
'pet' him. He knows my voice. He knows my touch. When I take his perch out to handle him, he comes straight to me, and anchors himself on my arm.
He's a snake, for pete's...

Well, I heard all about GTP's not being a good choice for a 'first snake', and how difficult they are to keep. I also heard about them having nasty
dispositions, and not being able to handle them. I must say, that my first (and only) snake is a chondro, which I had wanted for years. His care is not as
difficult or complicated as some of the Aussie gecko species I keep. I handle him regularly (in daylight hours only!), and every time I open his enclosure I
stroke his coils and talk...

I second the thought of getting an ATB. They are without a doubt, the most interesting species you'll ever get to "play with". Some are quite
docile, but they are the most alert species I've ever worked with. They notice everything. They are also quite hardy...even the imports, and are far more
forgiving of husbandry errors than GTP's. I love both species, but they are both completely different to work with although their needs are similar.

If you like tree pythons/boas I'd take a look at Amazon Tree Boas. The husbandry isn't so strict as Green Pythons but it helps u get familiar with
arboreal snake suck as green tree pythons as you gain experience. Plus on the good side Amazons tend to be less forgiving when you made an small husbandry
error since their such hardy snakes in the 1st place too. Ask Megf42 on here she has some nice ones and I am on her waiting list for her next clutch.

Hey thanks for all of your responses, very interesting. Yeah I didn't think morelia viridis would be the perfect choice for a first snake, but they would
make a fascinating pet I think. I'm not bothered by the fact they don't like to be handled often; I'd be more of the 'observer' as one of
you put it. Cats and dogs are the kind of pets you show affection/handle often.

Will- I fall closer to the 'observer' side of the spectrum, but lately I have started 'forcing' myself to handle my adults on a weekly basis.
Nothing too elaborate, but I do get them to 'de-perch' and crawl around for a minute. Why? Exercise mostly, but also it forces me to be more observant
with the animals. Sometimes the perching posture can hide wounds/things of concern. Also, I hope that this makes them more...
