Cervical dislocation is by far the quickest and easiest method. I'm sure the gas method is very effective and painless also, but I am not set up for anything like that. It took some practice, but a friend taught me how to do it easily and effectively with no blood. today i tried cervical dislocation with a small mouse but i ended up with a beheaded animal in my hands it was disgusting but atleast the mouse died...

ratzinger I would suggest cevical dislocation if co2 is not available. You preform it just like Brie stated, take a small pen, pencil or and object about this size and place it behind the base of the skull on the mouse's neck. Apply pressure downward onto the mouse's neck and firmly pull on the base of the mouse's tail at the same time. Its a little tricky the first few times and you may have to try a couple of times to kill the mouse on your first attempts but it gets easier once...

well in my country its not imposible to get the CO2 bot its really expensive so im trying to find other ways to do it without torturing the poor mice

LOL no Will you were perfectly clear that it was about rodents.

I just saw the chance to bring up the AVMA herp euthanasia issue since on that thread it was pretty much everyone against me...I'm still waiting for a repeat so as to vanquish my foes on that topic (note my 5th grade maturity level )

Yes, I recall the debate and am aware of some of the disagreements some have in regard to their herp euthanasia guidelines. I should have been more specific and said adopt the AVMA guidelines in terms of rodent euthanasia.

Will, FYI, there was a long and intense debate thread a while back about the AVMA guidelines on reptile euthanasia and by a clear majority the participants in that thread felt that the vets were clueless and the AVMA consensus was flawed.

I flick them on the head to "stun" them, then quickly pinch down HARD on the back of the neck to sever the spine.

Man, I haven't had to do that in a loooooooooooooong time.

Cervical dislocation(clean break of the skull away from the neck), or C02 gas. I typically(but its rare that I have to kill a live rodent) use the first option. Place mouse/rat on flat hard surface, hold by base of tail, place pencil/dowel/something similar at the back of the skull, press downwards hard and give a fast firm jerk on the tail. If you do it right, there should be barely a twitch.

As a labratory animal technician I deal with euthanizing mice on a daily basis. For this reason I have the availablity of more methods than the average basement breeder, but I agree that CO2 and cervical dislocation are the best, and really should be the only, methods for euthanasia in adult mice. CO2 is the fastest and most humane if you don't put too much in too fast. The rats and mice I kill with it are unconscious in under 30 seconds and dead in 3 minutes. You can easily make CO2 chambers. Otherwise, I've dispatched injured rodents by smacking their heads against a hard surface.
