Burms are threatening the ecosystem in the Everglade and the whole herp community. I count Bob Clark as a friend, but sorry, I'd like to see these animals tightly regulated. No more selling these things to kids,and idiots who keep 12 footers in aquariums and then are AMAZED that the thing pushed a whole BRICK up that was sitting on the top and escaped. And the no- kid suggestion is a good idea as well.

I agree Bob, it seems like a lot of the herp community views this as "throwing the big 5 under the bus" but I don't really see it like that. If ANYTHING, the ignorance of a few large constrictor keepers is going to screw the rest of us. Everytime something like this happens, the WHOLE herp community's head goes on the chopping block....not just the big 5 owners. They might be going under the bus...but they are dragging us with them by our collars. As Ben pointed out earlier...

Personally, I would like to see legislation passed. If owners were required to register their animals, they would be held accountable for the whereabouts of the animal throughout its lifetime... until ownership is transferred. I think the only way to prevent a broad-sweeping piece of legislation is to draft our own version of responsible legislation, as a community. One we could bring forward as the "experts" in the field of responsible reptile keeping. We can't stop...

Just to clarify, I don't necessarily think that legislation banning snakes (big 5, or all) is a good thing.
I just don't think it matters anymore what we think.

Sure, guns don't kill people, people kill people. Cars kill more people than guns. Pit bulls kill more people than snakes, bees kill more people than snakes (I once read a statistic that more people are killed annually by vending machines crushing them, than by snakebite). Chondros aren't dangerous,...

Uh-oh...here we go again...

I became involved in a very similar incident some years ago, while living in Massachusetts. A small, three-foot long, or so, retic escaped from its enclosure and managed to suffocate the snake owner's baby. This happened somewhere in Texas and the story made it to the Massachusetts evening news.

Because I kept a lot of large constrictors at the time (ranging in length from 12 to 16 foot) I was contacted by a local Boston news channel and was...

I really hope that any legislation that prohibits our keeping of safe boids never comes to pass. I too would not mind the eradication of ownership of the big 5 by the general populace. Unfortunately the persons writing and passing legislation do not understand many things-but they do understand green. Little green behind any such legislation prohibiting exotics. The amount of persons killed by horses is a good comparison in our favor.

Gun control and registration is another matter....

This may offend a few, but oh well....

In my opinion keeping one of the big five should require someone to jump through as many hoops as someone who wants to own a big cat or bear.

I can say with a clear conscious, I have no problem throwing the big five under the bus (by way of d@mn near prohibitive legislation), for the greater good of herpers in the US. Just show me where to sign.

Years ago I got out of Burms and got into chondros in part, just for this reason. I could no longer justify selling snakes to kids that could reach 10 feet in a year.

Put in perspective, more people die from dogs or horses in a single year than have ever died from pythons in the US. But hold on to your hats, we will be lucky if we survive the legislation that will stem from this. The chimp incident and now this will hurt us badly I'm afraid.

This is horrible.People take far too many risks while having large boids as pets.I had a 7 foot rtb when my children were young.I received it from a friend of a friend type of thing and I got rid of it because I just could not relax with a large boid around my children.I had the animal for less then a week.I kept it in the basement of the 3 story house I lived in at the time in a key-locked cage with 7 SHUT doors seperating the animal from my childrens...
